The Long and Short of It

Anne, at Spy Girl, has a fun, weekly challenge on her blog with a different theme each week.  This week's theme is "long over short" which turned out to be quite a struggle for me.  I don't really do "short" especially not at work, but I was determined to find something that met the parameters.  And I think I did:

Dress & Belt: thrifted  Shoes: Seychelles

It may not look like it at first glance, but this is not a dress.  Or, rather, not just a dress.

No, it's actually a dress (long) layered over a romper (short):

I buttoned the dress for modesty's sake and because I don't think a dress just belted over a romper would fly at work, so you can't see it very well, but I promise you, there is a shorts romper under there.

That's right.  I wore a shorts romper.  To work.

Don't worry.  I don't think anyone noticed.  They were all too dazzled by my vintage Eye of Sauron belt and the fact that my shoes appear to match my dress.  (They don't, they just go really, really well).

I am, admittedly, a pretty excitable person.  I get excited when I see deer eating the apples across the way. I get excited every time I find a new I.B. Diffusion sweater at my local Goodwill.  And I get excited when I see tiny adorable birds in the backyard.

What most recently has me excited are these wooden watches, from JORD:



They are watches.  Made of wood.  And, as you can see, they are gorgeous.

To be honest, I was just thrilled to find out that such a thing even existed.  Imagine then, my delight  when they offered me a watch to review!  I may or may not have squealed with joy at the prospect (I did).  And then I settled down to the difficult task of selecting a watch.

They are all beautiful, but I went with the 94A in  Natural Green & Maple because I'm madly in love with the square face:

See?  Pretty, right?  And so lightweight, it's amazing.

The Summer Sweater

I have long railed against short-sleeve sweaters.  I tend to sweat a lot and the last thing I want to wear during the hot, even sweatier, months of summer is a sweater.  Also, I figure if we have a day or two where it's chilly enough to wear a sweater, I probably don't want to wear a short sleeve sweater because, c'mon, what's the point?

Well, it turns out that the point is that they are adorable.

Seriously, I was in LOFT the other day for some tee shirts and I stumbled on this adorable, short-sleeved summer sweater:

Cute, right?  I love the color, a sort of denim blue and I love the subtle striped-ness of it.

I also love how it looks with my vintage skirt:

I am not sure why I don't wear this skirt more; it's really pretty delightful.  Just look at that print:

I think that, for some strange reason, I wasn't sure what to pair it with.  Which is ridiculous, because the answer is clearly "an adorable summer sweater":

Literary Stylings #11: Prim and Proper

Today's outfit is inspired by the book, The Lonely Polygamist, by Brady Udall:

As I mentioned last week, I really, really enjoyed this book.  I think it was both weird and wonderful and I highly recommend it.

One thing I was taken with is that people in the book were able to recognize members of "plyg" (polygamist) families based on their appearance.  Homegrown haircuts and either hand-me-down or Goodwill-acquired clothes were par for the course for the Richards' family.

Well, the other day I was in Goodwill and I found this vintage Neiman Marcus dress and thought it would be the perfect Literary Styling outfit for this book:

It is a bit schoolmarm, but I think it's just enough sister-wife as well.  And, it is from Goodwill.  Surely that counts for something!

Also, call me crazy, but I think it's kind of adorable:

You know, in a puffed-sleeve, Peter Pan-collared, uptight sort of way.  When I first bought it (it was all of $7.00) I wasn't sure if I'd wear it outside of the confines of this challenge, but now I think I might.  It will be interesting to figure out how to style it.

Leopard and Tigers and Midis, Oh My

Today's outfit features leopard and tigers and midis (oh my):

Although I will probably never be a tee-shirt-and-jeans kind of girl, I think I am on my way to becoming a tee-shirt-and-skirts kind of girl.

I like how tee shirts downplay the inherent dressiness of skirts, especially midi skirts, which can be kind of prim.  I mean, there is nothing prim about this tiger tee:

And that means, even paired with a midi skirt, leopard flats and a polka dot belt, my outfit isn't too precious.  No, in fact, it's just precious enough.  Which is all I ever really want in an outfit; that it be just precious enough.
