What I Read: February

Unlike last month, I didn't love any of the books I read in February.  Most of them were pretty good, one was quite good and two I hated, but I didn't love any of them.  But, that's okay, I'll still figure out something to wear come next Tuesday.

Now, for the books.

Hidden, by Paul Jaskunas

This is the book I found to be quite good.  It's a pretty darned good mystery and well written.  The author does a very solid job of keeping the reader interested without giving too much away.  The book centers around an attack on a woman, Maggie Wilson, for which someone was been convicted and incarcerated. But, was it the right someone?  To be honest, I've read the book and even I'm not sure it was the right someone.  If you like very clear, very solid resolution at the end of your books, this is not the book for you.  But, if you like a good story, I definitely recommend this book.

The Magician King and The Magician's Land, by Lev Grossman

I actually read the first book in this series, The Magicians, in January, but apparently forgot to include it, probably because I didn't love it.  But, I didn't hate it either so I wanted to read the last two books.  Which I did this month.  They, like the first book, were only okay.  The concept behind these books is very imaginative and I liked that.  But, I didn't really like the writing that much.  For example, I hated how the author kept name-dropping Harry Potter, saying things like, but of course, Hogwarts is only imaginary and Brakebills (the school of magic in this series) is real.  Dude, you're both imaginary.  Also, the author has one way and one way only to describe breasts.  Heavy.  That's it.  That's the only descriptor he knows.  And after the second or third time, it begins to grate.  So, if you're not picky about writing, go ahead and read these.  They aren't bad and they really are pretty creative.

The Sex Lives of Cannibals, by J. Maarten Troost

This is one of the books that I read that I hated.  It's supposedly a memoir about the author's time living on a small atoll in the South Pacific called Kiribati.  There is no sex and there are no cannibals, but that's not why I didn't like it.  I mean, I understand giving books titles that will entice readers instead of a title that actually pertains to the book.  I'll be calling my memoirs "The Life and Times of the Most Fascinating Woman in the World."  Because, well, reader enticement.  No, I didn't like this book because I didn't like the author.  As I said in my Goodreads review, he strikes me as entitled and I, personally, don't care to read about the charmed life of an entitled, not funny man.

Love Monkey, by Kyle Smith

This is the other book that I hated.  I'm willing to admit that I missed the point of this book and it is, in fact, satirical genius.  But, I don't think so.  The main character is just gross.  I mean, he commends himself on not jumping on (his words) a women even though she has the audacity to be in his apartment in a tank top with her bra straps peeking out.  And that's just within the first 25 pages.  It gets even worse as the book goes on.  Just because the author introduces his main character as a man-child doesn't mean his behavior is any more palatable.  As I said in my Goodreads review, this character is effing terrible.  And so is the book.

Given what I read this month, I'm pretty sure I'll be tapping Hidden for my outfit inspiration for next Tuesday.  It really is an interesting book.

What about you, Reader Friends?  Did you read anything good this month?

Belted and Scarved

This week's challenge over at Putting Me Together was to put a belt on it.  And "it" could be anything you wanted, other than pants.  I'm afraid I didn't get too creative with the challenge this week, choosing, as I often do, to just belt a dress:

I know, I know, belting a dress is far from groundbreaking.  But, I'm not just wearing a belt with my dress, I'm also wearing a scarf.

So, you know, that's something.

Oh.  Well, that was supposed to be a closer view of the scarf, but it mostly shows how crooked my belt is. Heh.

Crooked or no, my dress is belted and therefore this totally counts towards the challenge:

Dress: vintage, thrifted (similar)  Scarf: vintage, thrifted (similar)
Belt: v. old (similar)  Boots: Born Crown (similar)

Black and Navy

It seems as though the Fashion Gods have gotten really lenient lately.  Because, just as it's now okay to wear leggings again (still?), it's also now okay to pair black and navy.

So I did:

Sweater: Gap  Skirt: Old Navy (similar) (similar)
Cap: Nordstrom  Boots: Piperlime (similar)

Of course, I've been wearing black and navy for awhile now.  Often with leggings, but I guess I'm still happy to have approval from on high.

What about you, Reader Friends?  Do you pair black and navy?

Happy Tuesday, All!

Orphan Layers

Today's challenge at Putting Me Together was to wear something you haven't worn in six months or more.  So I took the opportunity to wear three things I haven't worn in six months or more:

The maxi dress was last worn this past summer.  I layered it under a long-line wool cardigan last worn sometime last winter.  And I added a scarf last worn sometime the winter before.

So many orphans.  So many layers:

Dress: LOFT (similar)  Cardigan: thrifted  Scarf: Nordstrom (similar)
Hat: Nordstrom  Gloves: Target (similar)

And so very cold.  Which is why I also added tights, OTK socks, a turtleneck, a stocking cap and long gloves.

Olive Valentine

I tried my darndest to wear red on Valentine's Day, but it just didn't work out.  So I wore olive instead:

Dress: Banana Republic (similar)  Tights: SPANX
Booties: Ash "Joyce"

And polka dots:

Oh, and studs:

Ash "Joyce" Booties (on sale now!)

So, yeah, not the most Valentine's-like outfit ever.

But, it's okay, because my fiance made up for my short-comings.  He wore pink:

Is he just the cutest?!

In the Pink

Although I usually avoid wearing pink around Valentine's Day, I couldn't resist pairing my fuzzy pink jacket with my new sweater vest:

Jacket: Vintage, gifted  Vest: Nordstrom  Turtleneck: Gap
Skirt: Thrifted  Tights: SPANX  Boots: Naya (similar)

It's just so pink and fuzzy:

And the sweater vest is pretty cool too:

The open sides and the high/low hem make it both modern and versatile.  And because it's a mock turtleneck, I can layer it over a standard turtleneck.  So, you know, that's a win-win for my turtleneck-loving self.

Spring-Like

We had a few days of quite spring-like weather here in PA the past couple of days so I took the opportunity to wear a couple of new pieces I received from Long Tall Sally:

Both the jacket and the shoes are some of Long Tall Sally's latest spring offerings and they were perfect for the warmer weather.

Although I am a size 14, LTS runs a little large, so I ordered the jacket in size 12 and it fits perfectly.  I definitely recommend going down a size.  I ordered my usual size, 10 and I'd say they fit true-to-size.  They are also pretty comfortable and I recommend them unless you're going to be doing a lot of walking; they don't have any arch support.  I wore them for running errands but caution against wearing them for actual running.

The jacket is the Textured Biker Jacket in Flame and the texture really is wonderful:

And the shoes are the Iris Cut Out Printed Ballerina and I love that they're a strong, graphic print.  I've been looking for a pair of black and white printed shoes for quite some time now, so I was thrilled to get these.

I paired the jacket and the shoes with a striped shirt, skinny jeans and green stud earrings:

Shirt: Banana Republic (similar)  Jeans: Gap
Earrings: Kate Spade New York

Why green earrings?  Well, because sometimes the best colors are complimentary colors.  I didn't make that up either; that's Science, Folks.

Neutrals & Neon

I know that neon is no longer on trend, but I still like wearing it.  It's just the thing to brighten up a neutral winter outfit:

I mean, yes, I could have worn a black scarf with this, but that would have been so boring.  On trend, perhaps, but boring.

One thing you can say about neon, it's definitely not boring:

Even in little pops like a scarf or earrings, neon is just fun to wear.  I admit that I am a little bit biased due to my love of the 80s.  But, really, neon is fun:

And so are capes:

Cape: sold out eShakti (similar)  Scarf: v. old (similar)
Jeans: v. old Gap  Earrings: Kate Spade New York

And of course, one doesn't wear neon or a cape without being visible, so I'm linking up with Patti today.

Half-Down, Half-Up

For today's Putting Me Together Style Challenge, we were challenged with trying a new hairstyle.  So I invented one:

I call it the "Half-Down, Half-Up."  Now, you may be thinking to yourself that my hairstyle looks suspiciously like the hairstyle they call the "Half-Up, Half-Down."  Well, you're wrong.  For that hairstyle, the emphasis is on the up portion.  For my hairstyle, the emphasis is on the down portion.

See how the "down" portion of the hair has actually been brushed?  That's a big deal for me.  And, although I don't have a close up of the "up" portion, I can promise you that it's half-assed at best.  I didn't even bother getting my barrette straight!

So, yes, it may look like the Half-Up, Half-Down, but it's most definitely a Half-Down, Half-Up.

I also wore some clothes:

Sweater: vintage, thrifted  Shirt: LOFT
Jeans: Old Navy   Boots: Nine West

I mean, it's nothing to blog about (and yet...) because it's just jeans, boots and a sweater.  But, this is one of my favorite thrifted sweaters.  It's fabulous because it looks like a plain blue sweater, but it's actually flecked with all sorts of colors:

That is some vintage heathered goodness right there.

Happy Thursday, All!

Literary Stylings #15: The Weight of Water

Today's look is inspired by the book, The Weight of Water, by Anita Shreve:

As I said in my post last week, I absolutely loved this book.  I love how Shreve writes and, for some reason, her descriptions of Norway reminded me of Oregon.  I was able to connect to this book in a way I wasn't able to with the other books I read.  So, I guess it makes sense that I'd be sartorially inspired by the book.

Here is my outfit:

Much of the book takes place in the North Atlantic, off the coast of Massachusetts so I thought winter white and chambray was a good way to go.

Shirt: LOFT  Cardigan: Gap  Jeans: Old Navy
Necklace: Modcloth (similar)  Boots: Born Crown (similar)

The cardigan also works with the theme.  Gap calls it a fishnet pattern, but it also looks to me like waves:

Either way, this outfit gave me a sense of the sea that I think worked for this book.

And now it's your turn.  You can link up below!

Happy Literary Stylings!

One Cowl to Rule Them All

Last year for my birthday, I bought a Skipjack Cowl from Victory Garden Yarn.  This year for my birthday, I bought a Snowdrop Cowl from Victory Garden Yarn:

And it is the best cowl ever.  One cowl to rule them all, if you will.  Or, heck, even if you won't.  Because I will.  But, you should.  Because this is a great scarf.

I wanted to get something more suited for the Pennsylvania winter this time around and this cowl is perfect for layering over cozy sweaters:

Cowl: Victory Garden Yarn  Sweater: Free People
Leggings: Macy's  Boots: Michael Michael Kors (similar)

I ordered the scarf in the charcoal and garnet combination, but Victory Garden Yarn offers 25 color choices and you can order the cowl in any combination of any two colors.

But, I really, really recommend pairing garnet with charcoal; it's fabulous:

Earrings: Modcloth

And perfect for winter without being drab:

Perfect.
