Foxxxy Anubis and No Waist

I am not anti-belt by any means.  I love belts; I have a ton of them.  But, that doesn't mean that I always want to wear one.  I mean, I know I have a waist (of sorts), do I really need to define it everyday?  I'm sincerely hoping the answer to that is no, because today's outfit features my Foxxxy Anubis brooch and no waist:

After one glorious week of sunshine, Oregon is back to it's rainy ways and I'm back to black.  And tights.

Skirt & Top: Thrifted  Blouse: Gap  Pin & Earrings: Vintage  Boots: Splendid

But, I tried to bright up my black with a heart-print top and switched out my standard black tights for blue.  And, of course, nothing says spring like a Foxxxy Anubis brooch:

Totally spring-like.

Happy Monday, All!

Spring Plaid

As I mentioned on here before, I was all about plaid for the fall.  And I was a bit sad to think I'd have to give up my plaid for spring.  I mean, sure, I like gingham okay, but I'm a plaid girl, really.  So, imagine how thrilled I was when the lovely folks at Foxcroft sent me a new plaid shirt that is perfect for spring!

Hooray!  Spring plaid!

Top: c/o Foxcroft  Jeans: Old Navy  Boots: Nine West

I've been a big fan of Foxcroft shirts for years, having thrifted several in the past.  And this shirt only reinforces that feeling.

I love the print, I love the fit and I love the colors.  Did I mention it's perfect for spring?

I also love how well it goes with my LOFT necklace:

Oooooh.  Shiny.

In short, it's perfect:

Link Party Reminder and March's Book

Hello Dearest Reader Friends!  This post is your friendly reminder that my Literary Stylings Link Party will be held next Tuesday, on April 1st.

As always, I’m not sure what I’m going to wear.  I read three very different books this month and could go a few different ways.

My Year of Meats, by Ruth Ozeki

This was a very interesting book.  And very different.  It’s about a Japanese-American woman who produces a Japanese television show on behalf of meat lobbyists to try to encourage Japanese housewives to cook more red meat, especially beef.  But, it's also about the wife of one of the Japanese executives that is also working on this show.

I thought it was well written, although the end did feel a little disappointing.  A word of warning: if you are an enthusiastic meat eater and want to remain an enthusiastic meat eater, I wouldn’t recommend this book.  It will put you off your feed.  Although I enjoyed this book there was not a lot of outfit inspiration, so unless I can convince Lady Gaga to lend me her meat dress I probably won’t use this book.

Under the Poppy, by Kathe Koja

As I mentioned before, this book was very confusing.  But, that being said, it wasn’t bad.  The author is very, very descriptive and that kept me engaged, even when I was confused.  It’s about a group of people who work at a whorehouse, called Under the Poppy.  At the Poppy they perform the usual whorehouse activities, but they also perform plays, and get embroiled in wartime intrigue.  This book has pretty much everything, including spies and whores and dandies and murders and dinner parties and puppets and soldiers.  And, although I already wore an outfit based on this book, here, I think I may return to the well for Tuesday’s look.

The Big Girls, by Susanna Moore

Quick warning; do not perform a Google image search for “big girls” in an attempt to find this book; you will see some very unsavory, extremely NSFW pictures.  If you Google “The Big Girls by Susanna Moore” though, you should be okay

That being said, I also have to warn you that this book is pretty depressing.  It’s sad and horrible but very well written.  I don’t mind sad books, but this was just so very sad.  It’s about a woman in prison for murdering her children and about her prison psychiatrist and about a movie star the woman contacts.  Interestingly enough, one of the reviewers said it was "very accurate;" I'm not sure what that even means, but I thought it worth noting.  Again, this book is very well written, but very sad.  And not a lot of outfit inspiration, so I doubt I’ll use this book.

I hope to see you all next Tuesday!

Inspiration Monday on a Tuesday

So, this is my look for Two Birds' Inspiration Monday:

Yes, I know it's Tuesday, but a girl does what she can.  I also had to do what I could with this inspiration photo because, as it turns out, I had basically none of the necessary pieces!

Here is the inspiration photo for my look:

It's Olivia Palermo.  As I've mentioned before, I'm not sure what she's famous for, but she seems stylish and has nice, shiny hair, so that's something.  I also really like her outfit.  Unfortunately, I had nothing in my closet that even remotely resembles what Ms. Palermo is wearing.

See?  Not even close.  But, I tried.  Instead of a tweedy, pink topper, I wore tweedy green (thrifted).  And instead of fun, colorful heels, I wore fun, colorful flats (Coconuts).  And my jeans (Old Navy) are only slightly distressed as opposed to full-on I Don't Give A F*ck distressed.  But, I think we can all agree that I nailed the white shirt.  Yay, me!

Happy Tuesday, All!

Orange You Glad You Have a Friend Like Ally?

Well, I am.  Because Ally, who blogs over at Shybiker, is the one who sent me this beautiful orange scarf:

As you can see, it's the perfect shade of orange.  It's not pumpkin orange, which is fine in a pinch, no, it's a lovely, luminescent coral orange.  And it's the perfect orange to pair with this skirt:

This vintage skirt remains one of my all-time favorite thrift store finds.  I love the delightful stretchy, possibly double-knit fabrication.  I love the crazy print.  And I love that the colors include the same lovely orange as the scarf Ally gave me:

And that's just one of the many reasons I'm glad to have a friend like Ally.  Thanks, Ally!

Happy Monday, All!

T3: Under The Poppy’s Lovers' Eye

For Thoughtful Third Thursday (T3), we are supposed to create an outfit based on a quote or synopsis of a book we’re reading.  I’m deviating from that a little bit in that my outfit is based not on a quote or synopsis from the book, but on something I learned about from the book.  Oh, and it’s not a book I’m currently reading, either; I actually finished it a couple of days ago.

That being said, the book is Under the Poppy, by Kathe Koja, and it was confusing as hell for me.  I’m honestly still not sure what it was about or what happened.  Things I do know: The Poppy is a whorehouse, there was a lot of confusing wartime intrigue, and the Madame of the whorehouse wore blue lovers' eye brooch.  That brooch was given to her by her brother, who got it from his sugar mama and it eventually ended up with the lead whore although I’m not sure how.

Anyway, it was that brooch that inspired today’s outfit:

Yes, those are eyes on my blouse.

The blouse, obviously, represents the brooch.  And the red belt represents the fact that a lot of people were killed, usually by a knife, in this book.  The rest is just there because coming to work in nothing more than a blouse and a belt is seriously frowned upon.

Prior to reading this book, I had never heard of lovers' eye jewelry.  But, according to Wikipedia, they are “Georgian miniatures, normally watercolor on ivory, depicting the eye or eyes of a spouse, loved one or child.”  The fad started in the late 1700s and the pieces “were often worn as bracelets, brooches, pendants or rings with richly decorated frames.”

Here are some examples of lovers' eye jewelry:

Personally, I find those pretty darned creepy, but delightfully so.  Just like I find this vintage eye-print blouse creepy, but delightfully so:

Seriously, I love this thing.  When I found it in the thrift store, I snatched it up like someone would try to steal it from me.  I'm starting to think that's not true; I may be the only one who would want this.  But, that's okay too!

Happy Thursday, All!  And thank you so much to My Closet Catalogue for hosting Third Thursday Threads!

Pink and Plum

The easiest way I've found to pair printed items with something in a color is to use the color palette in the prints themselves.  For example, today's houndstooth cardigan is hot pink and plum:

So I paired it with my plum skirt:

Cardigan: Target  Skirt: Thrifted  Belt: LOFT  Boots: Splendid

I think a lot of people default to pairing prints with black, or with jeans, instead of with color because they aren't sure what color to pull out of the printed piece.  It's not that deep; just pick a color and it'll be fine.  I could have easily paired this cardigan with a hot pink skirt, but I don't have a hot pink skirt, I have a plum skirt, so that's what I wore:

And see?  It turned out fine.

Happy Wednesday, All!

The Sweater Skirt Conundrum

I like sweater skirts because they allow a sleeker silhouette while still allowing me the ability to ride my bike or take the stairs or otherwise move in other-than-baby steps.  But I'll be damned if they don't show every single lump, bump and wrinkle!  It's a conundrum, I tell you, a conundrum.

And, apparently, between the tucked shirt, the tights, the slip for extra warmth/modesty and my body's natural contours, I have a lot of lumps, bumps and wrinkles going on:

Shirt: LOFT  Skirt: Thrifted  Boots: Splendid  Tights: SPANX

Which is too bad, because I otherwise really liked this outfit.  I love the combination of the cinnamon-colored skirt with the striped shirt.  And I love the combination of the black/aqua/coral necklace with this look:

BaubleBar necklace

I think the black plays nicely with the shirt, but that the coral also plays nicely with the skirt, being shades of orange and all.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that even with the lumps, bumps and wrinkles, I still love sweater skirts and I'd totally wear this outfit again.

Happy Monday, All!

A Raging Case of The I-Have-Nothing-To-Wears

Here is the dilemma, Reader Friends.  It is gorgeous and sunny here in Oregon (at the moment) but it is not warm.  So, I'm trying to find clothes that fit with the sunnier weather without freezing to death.  Turns out that I don't have a lot of options that meet that criteria, so I ended up in my bird button-down layered under a short-sleeve sweater:

Top: Nordstrom  Sweater: Thrifted   Jeans: Banana Republic  Flats: Nordstrom Rack

Yes, I did wear almost this exact same outfit at almost this exact same time last year.  But, only almost.  I did actually change it up a little bit.  For example, this time, instead of wearing neon studs, I'm wearing shell feathers:

I also changed up the bottom of my look, this time going with ankle zip skinnies and flats instead of flares and wedges:

I know, I know, it's not much of a difference, but I'm not kidding when I say I have a limited amount of clothing that is both spring-like and warm.  In fact, I think this is probably my toughest transitional period.  I'm tired of my drab winter clothes, but it's still too cold to pull out proper spring clothes, resulting in a raging case of The I-Have-Nothing-To-Wears.

What about you, Reader Friends?  How do you handle your winter-to-spring transition?

Happy Friday, All!

Mid-Week Musts: Workout Tunics

So, you've finally found the Tall yoga pants of your dreams.  But, you still don't quite have the yoga booty of your dreams and want a little more coverage back there.  No worries, I've got you covered.  Well, rather, these tops have got you covered:

Cover Your Bum

Top Left: Nike "Epic" Dri-Fit Wool Top
Top Right: Hard Tail Long Skinny Tee
Bottom Left: Nike "Future Fade 2" Tee
Bottom Right: Nike "Epic" Dri-Fit Crew Top

As you can see, I picked a colorful selection, but the Dri-Fit tops are available in neutrals, as well as several other colors.  Another place for longer tops is the ASOS tall section; especially if you tend more towards the couch sitting forms of yoga.

In the Limelight

No, no, I was not cast in an off-off-off-off-times-infinity-Broadway adaptation of Imitation of Life.  Though, I have to say that I wish that I were.  I love that movie.  I wonder if the book is any good.  I bet it is.  I should try to find it and read it and cry like a frickin' baby.

Anywho, no I'm not on stage, but I am wearing lime:

Sweater: Old Navy  Pants: LOFT  Boots: Born Crown  Necklace: Vintage via Lil' Gypsy

And it's staying lighter longer... so that title totally makes sense!

Also making sense, this color combination:

I know a lot of people wouldn't think to pair a lime top with teal pants, but it works because they're both shades of green.  Very different shades of green, but still, they're green and you can generally wear two or more shades of a color together and it will work out okay.

There you go, my tip for the day.  Oh, wait, I have one more.  If you haven't ever seen Imitation of Life, watch it.

And have a Happy Tuesday, All!

Dots and Spots

All though I am a well-known fan of mixing leopard and stripes, I've found that polka dots also work really, really well with leopard spots.  Case in point:

For some, this combination may even work better than leopard and stripes because there is less disparity between the two prints, making the combination less jarring to the eye:

Polka dots: Thrifted Foxcroft   Leopard Spots: Target   Necklace: Juicy Couture

If you're trying pattern mixing for the first time, or prefer a harmonious mix as opposed to a clashing mix, leopard and polka dots, in a neutral color palette, may just do the trick.

I, personally, rather love it:

Top: Thrifted Foxcroft   Dress: Target  Belt: LOFT  Boots: Splendid

That isn't to say I'm giving up my old standard of leopard and stripes, but this was a successful departure for me and one I'd definitely like to try again.

A Variation on a Theme

I don't have anything like a capsule closet, but I've been thinking that maybe I should.  Because it seems like the only things I wear are navy blue, stripes, mustard and leopard.  Often all at once.  Today's outfit is just a variation on that theme:

But, I'd like to point out that I added cobalt.  So, that's something:

Okay, not really.  I'll just go ahead and admit that, yes, its an oft-repeated color scheme here at Fashion for Giants, but I just can't help myself.  I love navy and mustard together and I love leopard and stripes together so mustard leopard with navy stripes just makes all the sense in the world to me.

Mid-Week Musts: Tall Yoga Pants

If you're tall and you do yoga, you know how difficult it is to find yoga pants that are long enough.  Even if you're tall and you don't do yoga but like to wear yoga pants around the house in case you have to downward dog for dropped Doritos, you know it's hard.  Well, this week's mid-week musts list is here to help:

Tall Yoga

Top left: These are Victoria's Secret and I'm not sure what inseam they are, but my friend, who is also six feet tall, says they are more than long enough.

Top right: These are from Old Navy.  I have two pairs of these and can attest that their claim to a 36" inseam is definitely valid; they are plenty long.

Bottom Right: These pants are from Marika.  They're shorter than the rest at 34" but Marika makes a great workout pant.  I have a cropped pair and they're my favorite for Jazzercise.

Bottom Left: This last pair is from Tall Water Jeans and if you're truly tall, these are your yoga pants.  They have a 37.5" inseam.  Yes, that's right, 37.5 inches on a yoga pant.  Brilliant.

I also included a fun top, a pink mat (I'm partial to pink for my mats) and adorably weird (weirdly adorable?) shoes that are great for both Doritos-lounging and commuting to yoga class.

Happy Wednesday, All!

Literary Stylings: The Good Thief

The Good Thief, by Hannah Tinti:

I hadn't quite finished this book when I wrote my reminder post last week so I wasn't sure if it was going to be the one I based my outfit off of.  But I did finish in time and it really was quite good, so I did decide to wear an outfit inspired by it.

The book is about an orphan with a missing a hand and who gets adopted by a very interesting man named Benjamin.  The orphan, Ren, is introduced to a life of crime with his adopted father, and his father's cohort, Tom.  The book is essentially about their adventures, but also contains the central mystery of who Ren is and how he lost his hand, as a baby, before being abandoned at the orphanage.

There are a lot of great characters in the book, including the girls who work at the mousetrap factory.  These girls  all wear "blue dresses with big brown boots" and black stockings and it's their look that I based today's outfit off of:

A blue dress, big brown boots and black stockings.

The factory girls also wear shawls, but I went with a floral handkerchief-style scarf instead:

When the factory girls were introduced in the book, I thought they were rather horrid.  But, by the end of the book I didn't think so at all and I was happy to base my look off of their "uniform."

And now, it's your turn.  If you read a book that inspired your look, please to link up below:
