Wednesday Colors on a Friday

Alternately Titled: I’m Not Unoriginal, I’m Just Cold

Although, I will say that it’s not as cold as yesterday.  We had rain instead of snow and ice last night, so that’s something.  I am, however, wearing pretty much the same color combination as I wore on Wednesday:

In my defense, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is a saying for a reason.  And, in my opinion, the combination of burgundy, olive and rust ain’t broke.  Besides which, today’s burgundy and olive are different shades than Wednesday’s and surely that counts for something.  (It is okay if I call you Shirley, right?)

Today I layered a deep olive dolman-sleeve sweater (a.n.a/JC Penney) over a deep burgundy turtleneck (Gap) and a tan striped tunic (Old Navy).  I added skinny jeans tucked into riding boots (Born Crown “Sosie”) and a rust-hued paisley scarf (Target).

Okay, yes, fine, you caught me.  I’m a little unoriginal; these are the same boots and scarf as Wednesday.

Take Four: Cardigans and Chunky Knits from Coast to Coast

Chunky knits, cardigans or otherwise, are big this fall.  But, how do you keep this big trend from making you look, well, big?  Here at Fashion for Giants, we put a belt on it:

I layered a chunky, dolman-sleeved cardigan (Kensie via Nordstrom) over a long-sleeve tee (Gap) and then I belted the heck out of it with a studded belt (Michael Michael Kors via Nordstrom).  I also tried to balance the bulk of the sweater by keeping it slim on the bottom with skinny jeans (Bandolin via Macy’s) tucked into riding boots (Born Crown “Sosie” via Nordstrom).

Now, perhaps you are thinking “This outfit is okay, but I’d like to see some other options on how to wear chunky knits this fall and winter.”  Or, perhaps you’re thinking, “That’s all fine and dandy for giants, but what about for non-giants?”  Or maybe you’re thinking, “Sure that works for sunny-yet-cold Oregon, but what about my region of the country?”  Well, folks, I can help you with that.  Or, rather, my new friends can:

Tunic and Skinnies

While I wouldn’t say that I have a uniform, per se, a tunic and skinnies is probably as close as I get:

It’s just a really easy look for me on days when I need easy, but don’t necessarily feel like wearing a dress.  Today was one of those days, so I paired a dolman-sleeve tunic (Angie via Ross), layered over a lace-trim cami (Old Navy), with “regular” length Flirt skinnies (Old Navy) and a pair of wedges (Bamboo via TJ Maxx).  I added a watch and a bracelet and I was done.  Not the most inspired look, perhaps, but I think the tunic adds enough interest so that it’s not the most boring look either.

Now, I’d like to say a word about dolman sleeves.  I love them.  I have several pieces with dolman sleeves (my dress from this weekend, for example) and they’re just great.  Especially for someone with my broad shoulders – a dolman sleeve gives my shoulders a bit more room to move around, which I love.  I hate feel constricted in my clothes so these really work well for me.  Also, as my bloggy friend Erin has pointed out, they have a fabulous sense of drama.  And what girl doesn’t love drama, right?  Right.

Today’s Takeaway?  If you don’t already love dolman sleeves, crawl out from under that sartorial rock and give them a shot.  They’re comfy and dramatic.
