This Outfit is Weird

It is.  I think it’s conceptually sound, but the execution was shaky:

(** Similar boots, sheer floral vintage dress, similar belt)

Allow me to explain.  It was finally boot weather here in Oregon, so of course I had to wear boots.  And I love wearing boots with dresses, so I had to wear a dress.  And the dress I chose is sheer so I had to wear a slip.  And I’ve always wanted to try a dress with an exposed slip, so I selected a slip that’s just a bit longer than the dress.  All that makes sense, right?

Well, here’s where it fell apart.  I paired cognac boots (Steven Madden) and a belt (thrifted) with this dress (vintage Blair, thrifted) because I swear to goodness there is some cognac in the print:

But, not enough to notice from far away, making the look a little iffy.  Adding to the iffy-ness is the fact that I refused to iron the slip.  Because to me that’s like ironing sheets.  Or jeans.  Ridiculousness.  (Unless, of course, you iron your sheets and jeans and then I totally respect your commitment to a wrinkle-free life).  So, yeah, not quite what I wanted.

That’s okay though, I gave it a shot and I’m not mad that I did.

Happy Wednesday, Everyone!

  1. I think that it matches! I love the boots with the dress, can't wait to bring that back into my life! Today I was happy about my lined tights and flats! It's like a whole new closet again! Definitely have been meaning to try to exposed slip thing too- and NO WAY i will be ironing it ;)

  2. I think it's a total success, Gracey. The belt and boots look great, I would never have noticed anything unironed about the slip, and I love the dress, so pretty. It's always good to try a new look, and I think it works brilliantly! xxx

  3. I think the cognac looks great! The dress is navy enough that it matches really well with the accessories :)

  6. I like this look! I think you didn't have to have an exposed slip, but it didn't detract from the overall look either :)

  8. I love the dress. And whether to iron or not is a personal choice. This is America, after all!

  9. i think without the slip, the dress would have hit at the perfect length but other than that, i really love this look! i think your belt and boots match pretty darn close and that's what caught my eye first, although i love the same shade in your dress when you look close up! i am a sucker for matcyhness and think this totally works!

  10. Put me in the love it camp! It all goes together in a happy, funky way, and the boots are fab with everything.

  11. What a beautiful dress! I love the slip peeking through. While I agree that a different belt may work a little better, I don't think this outfit is weird at all. The dress looks really great on you.

  12. I really like the cognac belt and boots. The part about ironing jeans cracked me up. My mom totally does that. I used to do it too until I had a room mate call me out on it lol.

  15. I iron my jeans :-) ... I love this dress Gracey - its so very feminine and looks stunning on you ... overall a great outfit, that dress just makes it all ... how about a pair of midnight blue boots and the same colour belt? Or even purple ... I just think they'd both look stunning with this dress ... or you could go with the safe thing and wear black?

    Have a fabulous day.

  16. With the wrinkles on the boots the unironed slip is just a subtle way of creating repetition in your outfit! Anyway, it looks lovely, the boots are fantastic on your great legs!

  17. I like it!! And i totally see the cognac in the print!
My sister has everyone beat for insane ironing. She irons her husbands boxer short. BOXER SHORTS people. Because he likes them "crisp". If my hubby asked me to iron his underwear I'd tell him to crisp something!!

  18. I saw your comment on another blog, and just had to check out a blog with the title "Fashion for Giants"...an attention-getter for sure! :)

Despite all your caveats, I think the outfit works, because my first thought on seeing it was how pretty you looked.

Hope you'll stop by and say hello...I'm hosting a give-away!

  19. i like it! the dress itself looks fabulous on you. and i love it with the boots and belt. and the slip is great, too...i would never blame you for not ironing it!! i knew a woman who used to iron her son's underwear. huh?

  20. I see what you mean, but it still looks nice!

  21. Really? I think that the cognac works really well with this dress for the EXACT reason that there are bits of cognac in the dress. I don't think you look weird! I think you look lovely!

  22. I think the belt looks fine with the dress! It doesn't clash and the boots help tie the cognac colors together. I do agree that slip would look a little better if ironed. It looks a little odd. You could have maybe worn some tights to help with the sheerness? I applaud the effort. I know there's often times outfits I put together in my head and then when I put it on, it's not so cute.
