Why Not Try: Black with Brown

This fall and winter, why not try black with brown?  I know that when I was growing up the edict was either/or, but never both together.  Thankfully, fashion has become more relaxed and we can wear white after Labor Day, socks with sandals, and, yes, black with brown.  In fact, pairing black with brown can be extremely chic when done right.

So, what constitutes to doing it right?  Luckily, for this combination, it’s hard to go wrong.  I personally like to pair my black with warmer browns, such as camel, caramel or cognac.  But, it can be equally chic with darker browns such as chocolate and espresso.  Really, the only thing to keep in mind is to make the pairing look deliberate.

For example, I wouldn’t pair an all-black outfit with espresso-brown shoes because it could look like you got dressed in the dark and accidentally chose your brown shoes instead of your black shoes.  However, the same black outfit with lighter brown shoes, such as cognac, indicates you deliberately chose contrasting shoes to enhance the look.   And adding both a brown belt and brown shoes can make the look even more deliberate.

Probably the easiest way to try this trend is to find items that combine the two for you.  For example, my black flats have a brown ankle strap, making pairing them with my black dress easy as pie:

Another easy way to wear black and brown is to introduce a third color, like with my black, brown and cream dress:

I'm excited to wear this dress this fall with boots.

Other black and brown items I love for fall include these fabulous printed pants from Anthropologie:

And this polka dot sweater from Old Navy:

Still not convinced?  Maybe you need a little Pinspiration?  In that case, here are some of the black and brown looks I’ve pinned for inspiration this fall:

What about you, Reader Friends, do you pair black with brown?  If not, will you give it a try this season?

  1. After reading your post I think more positive about the autumn and winter season! You look darling in your dresses!

  2. Leopard print = black and brown in loooooove. I love how they look together. I also do shades of each... so a dark brown with gray looks really nice as does a light brown with black.

  3. I loooooooooooooooove black and brown together, always have and always will. I have a pair of black and brown wedges with an ankle strap similar to yours. I didn't know there was an edict, but I saw white high heel pumps on a lawyer today, so all fashion edicts from my youth must have been stricken from the law books. Yay!

I'm pretty sure that Looks Like Got Dressed in the Dark might be my personal style...lol. I'm forever mixing up black and navy blue shoes and tights. But I think that might be "in" this season. Finally!

  5. As just Tweeted, I did and do! You look lovely; that dress is so gorgeous! Those Anthropologie pants are so, so gorgeous. Like a gorgeous combination of stained glass and Persian rug. I am so glad to see some of those old clothes rules dying a well-deserved death, I can't even tell you.

    1. And how many times did I use the word "gorgeous" in that comment? Sheesh. I think I'm just overly enthusiastic tonight.

  6. I've always avoided pairing black and brown, but you make it look so chic and easy. I'll have to give it a try soon ... :)

  8. I never gave a second thought to pairing black and brown. I have never hesitated pairing black with anything! No, actually, navy may not have been an obvious choice, but that´s ok now, too! And so stylish! I envy your collection of dresses. I live in the harsh reality of Swedish Lapland and dress/skirt season is three months, at the most. For four or five months one can´t go outside without a pair of thermo-pants on top of one´s regular trouser. Right now, we´re in rain storm season...

  10. YES to black and brown! I'm a fan of pairing neutrals with black as a sort of dark bold pop or edginess.

  11. Those dresses are among my favourites of yours, both amazing! I never understood what the taboo was against black and brown, it has always looked good to me - when I was 15 I had a dusty brown suede pencil skirt I paired with a black turtleneck, tights, and riding boots and felt like the bees' knees. Really nice inspiration finds!

  12. I really like that last picture! I have a pair of wedge sandals with black and brown on them. The color combo makes them versatile.

  13. I'm definitely down for some brown (and black) this fall and winter--I'm waiting on a brown, black, and white circle scarf to arrive in the mail (dang Fab takes so long to ship!), and I have a cute vintage brown dress that is just asking for some black accessories. Now if only the temperature would drop below the mid-80s...

I also love combining black and navy blue, despite what people say :P haha

P.S. Thanks for the lovely comment you left on my blog a while ago :)

  15. I personally love black and brown together. Most of my brown boots get worn with black tights and black dresses. I know there is that age old rule about it, but I personally think the combo is perfectly classic. Thank you for all the ideas, Gracey!

  16. I often pair black with brown, clearly so many prints incorporate it effortlessly, so why not? If A leopard and can mix black and brown, so can we.

    Love both your printed dresses!

  17. Great idea for a post. Black and brown doesn't get the credit it deserves. I love deep cognac accents against an all black outfit. I love the print on your dress.

  19. I like black and brown together, too! Black can be a little harsh on me and I think brown softens it up a bit. You look great in both outfits but #2? WOW. That dress was made for you! It's gorgeous.

  23. Great outfits you picked out and just FYI I bought the old navy polka dot sweater and found it to be very short but I am going to try and find something high waisted to pair it with! Cute blog love Heather

    1. They're the "Natalie" sandal from Banana Republic and unfortunately they are a couple of years old now. However, if they bring them back, I highly recommend them. They are easily the most comfortable platform sandals I've ever worn.
