I wore this when we still had all that snow, but it was already a bit warmer. Warm enough, at least, to forgo a scarf and wear a lady tie instead.
It's not that you can't wear lady ties in the dead of winter, it's just that when you have to cover them up with a thick scarf, it robs people of the enjoyment they get from admiring said lady tie.
You want people to enjoy your lady tie, don't you?
In spite of being about a whorehouse, a lot of clothes are worn in Under The Poppy. And although I wasn't very fond of this book, I thought the author was very descriptive and therefore the book is pretty inspirational in terms of outfit ideas.
Albeit strange outfit ideas. My first look inspired by this book was inspired by lovers' eye brooches. My second is inspired by a group of eligible young bachelors who want to appear less eligible so they purposefully dress against fashion. For example, one wears "scarlet breeches and a swallowtail coat striped so violently black-and-white that it dazzles the eye, paired with a bouffant tie of vile green." While another wears an outfit "black and severe as a parson's though with trousers so tight and frock coat so excessive - lapels drooping like lily petals, coattails that nearly graze the ground - his is the most extreme costume of all."
I decided to wear an outfit based on a mix of these two looks:
I kept the muted tone of the second look, with skinny black pants and a black jacket, but added some polka dots and a bouffant tie in honor of the first look. The polka dot dress also serves my attempt to get the feel of an excessive frock coat.
Basically, I was trying for a mix of proportions and patterns I wouldn't usually wear but after I put this on, I realized I would totally wear this outside the confines of this challenge:
I mean, it combines layers and leopard and polka dots and black and navy blue. And a lady tie! Those are all things I like to combine in my outfits anyway. Granted, not usually all at once, but, as far as I'm concerned, this works.

So, this outfit sort of looks like something a Professor of Equestrian Sciences might wear for the last class before winter break:
In other words, it doesn't look like spring. But, in my defense, it doesn't feel like spring in Oregon right now either. It is cold, it is wet and layers are definitely necessary. Are Christmas-y layers necessary? Probably not, but they're happening anyway, aren't they?
The answer is yes, yes they are.
Actually, I think it's just the blouse that throws this look into Christmas territory. At least that's what my sister says; she swears it's covered in snowflakes. But, it's not; they're little flowers:
Not the most spring-like flowers, but flowers all the same. So, at least I'm a seasonally appropriate Professor of Equestrian Sciences.

I thrifted the tie this summer and have been waiting for it
to get cold enough that extra fabric around my neck would be welcome and not
make me a hot, sweaty mess.And today, My Friends, is the day:
For the lady tie’s inaugural outing, I paired it with a
mustard sweater (thrifted, similar), black skinny jeans (a.n.a via JC Penney)
and riding boots (Born Crown “Sosie,” similar).
But, really, a pet leopard lady tie goes with everything.
… but the rest of me loves it.“It” being my new-to-me vintage tunic:
I do love it, but my thighs seriously hate it.In fact, I can’t even button it all the way to
the bottom without them threatening to Hulk out.But, that’s okay, I just wore it over
leggings with the bottom two buttons undone and my thighs stopped yelling about
being suffocated in polyester.They are
so dramatic.
In addition to the tunic (vintage, gifted) and leggings
(Target), I also wore boots (Enzo Angolini “Saylem” via Nordstrom) and another
lady-tie (silk Brooks Brothers via St. Vincent Depaul).Because it’s International Lady-Tie
Week.Okay, it’s not, but it should
be.Perhaps the next time my thighs are at
the UN attempting to get recognized as an independent republic, I’ll float the
idea past the General Assembly. I can't imagine any country not supporting that proposal.
Enough about the lady-tie though, let’s get back to the
tunic.The fact of the matter is; I wasn’t
going to allow my pouty, secessionist thighs to ruin this tunic for me.I love this thing.I love the crazy print:
And I love how it came to end up in my closet.
This tunic was originally purchased by my fabulous
friend, Jeanne, when we were shopping together at Vintage by the Pound.I didn’t fight her for it because she was a
guest in my city, but I did cast a lot of covetous looks in her direction.And then, the other day, she mailed it to me
out of the blue!Needless to say, I was
thrilled and Jeanne is awesome.

We had a beautiful day here in Oregon today.The past couple days haven’t been cold, but
they’ve been overcast.Today was both
warm and sunny.It made me happy.And a little cheesy, if this photo is any
indication:

What I do know is
that I love this outfit and I wish it had photographed even a little better:
I wasn’t sure which shoes to pair with the combination of
mocha skirt (vintage via Goodwill) and yellow sweater (Gap), but I think I
really, really like the houndstooth flats (Old Navy via Goodwill) with it. Yes, I basically like houndstooth with everything, but this look just reinforces that.
Also, you see that lady-tie?It’s a new lady-tie I found when searching for a lady-tie for my girl,
Ally.I love it because it pairs well
with my mocha skirt but it also makes me laugh because it’s a lady-tie printed with lady-ties:
If that’s not some sartorial hilarity, I don’t know what is.
Not that that there would be anything wrong with pink, but I swear it’s peach.And I did pair my peach sweater (thrifted
via Goodwill) with a polka dot lady-tie (thrifted silk via St. Vincent de
Paul).I also wore a houndstooth skirt
(thrifted via Goodwill) and added cream tights (Target) and pointed-toe booties
(Luxury Rebel “Yuma” via Piperlime).
I have to say, I feel all soft and fuzzy in this outfit,
what with the subdued hues and the fluffy hair:
Especially in comparison to yesterday’s look.Soft and fuzzy wasn’t necessarily my intention with today’s
look (I don't think I had one outside of warmth and minimal drying time), but, I guess I’ll take it.
