A Whole Lotta Denim

My initial thought when I first got this dress was, "Whoa, that's a whole lotta denim":

My second thought was, "Ooh, snaps.  I love snaps."  My third was, "Crap, I hope my thighs don't take those snaps as a sign to make a run for it."


And my fourth thought was, "That'll be so cute paired with cognac boots."  And it was:

It was also cute with a floral-print wool scarf:

Was it still a whole lotta denim?

It's been so hot lately, I've been essentially living in summer dresses, with a cardigan for work, of course.  Today's summer dress is a bright, bold floral:

Drapes Like a Dream

It probably won't surprise you to know that I'm wearing another shirtdress today.  But, what may be surprising is that this one is just plain navy:

See?  Nothing fancy.


But, I like this one because it's a different silhouette than most of my shirtdresses.  And because, as far as navy blues go, this is a pretty blue:

Same Dress, Different Vest

I like to wear this dress with vests:

Mostly because the dress is racer back and although the only summer-wear we've been cautioned against at work are cut-offs and tube tops, I have my doubts about the professionalism of a racer back dress.  So, I layer it with vests.

Last time it was a flowing cream vest.  Today it is this olive vest:

Speaking of this olive vest, I was worried that it was too short for my long-ish torso, but it works better on me than I'd hoped.  It also looks good with my chunky LOFT necklace:

The Convert

I've long resisted the siren song of the vest as a summer layering piece.  But, wouldn't you know it, I've become a convert, pairing my new vest with a midi dress:

I don't know why I was so resistant to the summer vest.  But, I know exactly why I converted: Devon Rachel.  If the summer vest is a cult, she is it's High Priestess. She wears the heck out of vests during the summer and has inspired me to do the same.  In fact, I first saw today's vest on her blog.

She wore it over a LBD, but I paired mine with a BGM (blue-gray midi) instead:

I don't often run out to buy something I see on another blog, in part because my pocket book wouldn't support it, but also because I know that just because I admire something does mean it will work for me.  But, this vest?  As soon as I saw the back I knew it would definitely work for me:

And I kept the drama going by wearing all the jewelry I own.  Just kidding.  I only wore most of it:

A Midi and A Moto

I've never been able to figure out how the girls on Pinterest are able to pair a midi, a moto and a pair of ankle boots without looking both stumpy and wide.  Of course, not knowing how to do something doesn't stop me from trying.  Case in point:

I'm fairly certain it has something to do with the ratio of shaft height to heel height on the boots.  Also probably a factor is the length of the dress in relation to the boots.  But, I have no idea what those ratios should be.  That being said, I do think this is probably my most successful attempt at the look:

And to be honest, what I think makes it successful, if, indeed it is, is the dress.  This dress is beautiful.  It's the perfect color and the print is gorgeous:

It's part of the MarketPlace: Handwork of India Spring Collection and I love it.  I love the fit and I love that it's actually a midi, even on my tall self.  I was actually concerned that it wouldn't be, but I think the length is perfect.  And, of course, like all MarketPlace items, it is hand-printed, hand-embroidered and its manufacturing helps provide jobs and training to female artisans in India.

So, yeah, I'm honestly not sure I'm pulling off a midi and a moto; all I'm really sure about is that I will be wearing the heck out of this dress from here until next fall.
