Long Tall Sally Turns 40

Tall retailer extraordinaire Long Tall Sally, turned 40 this week.  And they also released their fall line.  Now, I am very excited that LTS is 40, but I'm even more excited about this line.  So much so, that I'm wearing almost head-to-toe LTS for today's adventures:

The blouse, the skirt and the boots are all courtesy of Long Tall Sally, and are all from the new collection.


When offered the opportunity to review some pieces, I chose these three because I am unable to resist the color of the boots or a multi-colored stripe and I love denim skirts for fall and winter.  This skirt is the perfect length for both short boots like these and for tall boots and tights when cooler weather arrives.  That being said, I think the boots are my favorite piece; I really do love the color and they are very, very comfortable.  (They are also available up to size 15!)


The only pieces of this outfit that aren't LTS are my woven belt (it's thrifted) and my earrings:

These are vintage; found, cleaned and restrung by my mom.  They're plastic so they're lightweight, but still dramatic.

The Mini

Recently I was once again lucky enough to be contacted by the lovely people at Long Tall Sally with the offer to review a few pieces from their current collection.  And, once again, I jumped at the chance.  There were a couple of pieces that I knew I wanted to try right off.  One was this mini skirt:

I don't wear a lot of mini skirts, but I couldn't resist the bold, graphic print and subtle shine of this skirt.  I think it's beautiful.  I also think that it's perfect for holiday parties.  However, I don't go to holiday parties.  I go to work.


But, I have good news!  Because the shine is subtle, this skirt is also good for work, especially when dressed down with an over-size sweater:

See?  Mostly, maybe even totally, work appropriate!  Hooray!!



In addition to being both party-ready and probably-work-ready, this skirt is fantastic because you can pair it with a variety of different colors.  It would look fabulous with a black top, of course, but I also really like it with this tobacco-colored (Gap's description, not mine) sweater.  I think it pairs well with the cream and black colorway:

But, really, you can pair nearly any color with this skirt.  And, knowing me, I likely will at some point, because this skirt is both beautiful and versatile.

A Different Dark Floral

Usually when I think of "dark floral," I think of a rich floral print on a black or dark back ground.  But, today, I'm wearing a different dark floral:

In the case of this blouse, the floral print itself is actually dark and the background is white.


And, I gotta tell ya, Folks, I rather like it:

And I think it'll be pretty versatile for layering in a variety of winter outfits.


For today though, I just paired it with one of my vintage midi skirts.  I thought it was a good opportunity to show off both the blouse and the skirt:

Gray Leopard

The other day I was wandering through Macy's in search of a new fall lipstick when I saw this gray leopard skirt:

Of course, my search for lipstick was immediately ended when I saw this skirt.  I mean, who cares about the perfect plum when you can get the perfect sweater skirt?


And it really is the perfect sweater skirt:

I love the length, the print (of course) and the fit; it has a nice wide waist band so it's super comfortable.


And, did I mention that it was a sweater skirt?  I've convinced myself that means I can wear it all winter long:

Not Burgundy and Red

Today's outfit looks like burgundy and red:

But, it's not.  I mean, yes, the skirt is red, but the sweater is not burgundy.  It's actually a blend of navy and red:

A blend that, from far away looks like burgundy.

Coral Moto

This coral moto is such a great piece:

It makes every outfit better.  And brighter.  And is beyond perfect for spring.


The texture is great too:

Textured pieces add another layer of interest to an outfit without actually having to add another layer.


But, the best part is the color:

Style Imitating Art: Spring

I finally got my act together and was able to participate in Style Imitating Art.  This week's inspiration, as chosen by Jess, of Animated Cardigan, was this stained glass window:

It is, appropriately, titled "Spring" and was designed by John La Farge.  Gorgeous, right?


As soon as I saw it, I knew I needed something blue and floral.  Luckily for me, I have something blue and floral:

I thought this print and color of this vintage dress was perfect for the challenge:

And, of course, it's not warm enough for a dress alone, so I added an olive jacket, some blue tights and ankle boots.

Are the blue tights perhaps a bridge too far?  Short answer, no.  Long answer, I figured that blue tights were better than having blue legs.  From the cold.  Because it's freezing.

Spring Transition

This is what I wear when it's cold but sunny so that I want to stay bundled up but also want to wear spring colors:

Boots: Nine West "Hissyfit"

I'm still in tights and booties, but they're open-weave tights and completely impractical booties.  And I'm still in a black skirt, but I paired it with a floral print and a pink jacket.

I figure the floral sweater is a good middle ground for early spring.  It's a floral, but it's also a sweater.  And even though it's a dark floral, the little pops of pink tie in nicely with my pink jacket.


Basically, this outfit lets me feel a little like spring, but without freezing to death:

I think that's the core logic behind any good spring outfit; spring-y and no frostbite.

Spring Things

It's been pretty warm here lately, so I've been trying to wear some spring things:

But, it's been hard because although it's warmer, there is still actually quite a bit of snow on the ground.  It feels weird running around with no coat and bare ankles when the yard is still covered in snow.


I mean, I wasn't cold in this outfit, but I felt like I should have been cold:

But, in reality, the combination of the shirt and vest kept me perfectly warm:

And my ankles didn't even notice the lack of wool socks and snow boots:

I'm still not sure if this is spring here in PA, but I do know that it's finally warm enough to wear some spring things.

Literary Stylings #16: Hidden

As I said last week, Hidden, by Paul Jaskunas, was really the only book I read last month that I liked:

As it's entirely too cold to be running about in a wet nightie sans undercrackers, I decided to base my look not on the cover, but on a passage from the book.

I recall we had a cold November.  There were snow flurries, and the flakes were a reminder of a secret the world was trying to tell me about myself.  The colder it became, the more I wanted to feel beautiful.  I bought pleated skirts, snug dresses, tights, and open-neck blouses.  I wore jewelry and perfume to sustain myself.

And here is my outfit:

As you can see, my skirt has a few pleats in it and I paired it with tights and an open-neck blouse.  I'm also wearing both jewelry and perfume:

Although the above passage inspired my look, I can't really relate to it.  Here the cold just makes me want to wear more and more layers.  I don't care if I feel beautiful or not, I'm all about feeling warm.  However, I do think this is an important passage in the book because I'm not sure she, the main character, Maggie Duke, is telling the truth.  I think she wanted to feel beautiful, but not because of the cold.

This book is very interesting because you never really know what the truth is.  In it, Maggie is attacked and nearly killed and her identification of her attacker based on her memories from that night get him sent to jail.  But, then you find out that perhaps her memories of that night are not, in fact, true and maybe he didn't do.  Maggie goes back through her memories of the time leading up to the attack as well as the attack itself and as she does so, you start to doubt her a little bit.  Not just about the attack, but about everything.

You never really do find out what happened to Maggie that night, or rather, the author provides a couple of different options.  It all depends on if you believe Maggie or not and you're definitely given reason not to.  Just as you're given reason not to believe the other characters in the book.

Again, this really was an interesting book and a good mystery.  And, as an added bonus, it produced an outfit I like:

Donuts, Not Layers

Although I love layers, I don't always feel like I do them well.  It can be hard with my build to wear a layered look without adding bulk.  Especially around the midsection where everything converges (shirt, sweater, waistband).  But, I think I nailed it with this look:

I wish the pictures were better, but it was pouring the day I wore this because, well, Oregon.  But, really, this is probably my most successful attempt at layering ever.  I even layered my collar with a necklace!

Yeah, this is definitely my best layering ever.



I mean, just look:

The only bulk around that midsection there is due to donuts (I really like the chocolate cake kind), not due to layers.
