Trench and Slouchy Beret

Since moving to a much, much colder climate, I've become a bit of a collector of winter hats.  So, when offered the opportunity to try, and review, a slouchy beret from Scala Pronto, of course I accepted.  And I'm so happy I did.

I chose the oatmeal colorway and I love it.

This hat is perfect for fall because it pairs well with my trench coat.  And also because it covers less of my head than a beanie so it helps keep me warm but not over-heated.

It's also offered in gray and both colorways have a subtle metallic yarn running through the knit and a mix of stitches to add interest:

As I mentioned, I chose the oatmeal color and yes, I chose it specifically to wear with my trench, because it's my go-to coat for fall:

Although, now that I think about it, I might need the gray as well.  If only to match my suede boots:

Hat: c/o Scala Pronto  Trench: Banana Republic (similar, hooded, cape version)
Skirt: Gap   Tights: Gap  Boots: Circa Joan & David (similar)

Because, really, in Western PA, you can't have too many knit caps.  Happily, these hats are only $32 a piece and you get free shipping at Village Hat Shop.  Definitely worth it to have two, I think.

Blush and Plaid

This is probably one of the most matchy-matchy outfits I've ever worn:

And I don't care, I love it.

Mostly because I've been waiting for ages to wear this skirt:

It's a vintage Pendleton that I thrifted before I left Oregon last year.  It spent the next several months in storage, and by the time it made it out, it was too warm for wool.

I'm happy to announce that it is no longer too warm for wool:

In fact, it's the perfect weather not only for wool, but for trench coats and riding boots as well:

Blouse: LOFT  Skirt: vintage Pendleton, thrifted
Boots: Born (similar)  Trench: Banana Republic (similar)

Silk Scarf Kick

I have been on a silk scarf kick lately.  I wore one here, here and another today:

And I don't think I'll be stopping any time soon.  They great for a bit of extra warmth on chillier Spring days (so, you know, all of them here in PA).  They're great for adding a bit of color.  And they're so easy (and cheap) to thrift.

I especially love the color and pattern on this one:

Scarf: vintage, thrifted  Shirt: vintage, thrifted (similar)
Skinnies: Old Navy Hi-Rise Rockstar  Trench: Banana Republic (similar)  Boots: Born (similar)

The scarf is vintage, and thrifted, and I paired it with a vintage, striped shirt (also thrifted), skinny jeans, boots and a trench.  Because trenches are pretty great for chilly Spring weather too:

Literary Stylings #13: Spy Game

As I mentioned on Saturday, I only finished one book in July, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy:

It was a pretty good book and I thought it made for an easy Literary Stylings.  I mean, it's one book, it's about spies; just dress like a spy, right?

Well, the truth of the matter is that it's too damned hot to dress like a spy.  I mean, can you imagine wearing a trench with a turned up collar and a fedora in August?  Ugh.  No.

And then I remembered my sleeveless trench and, et voila, problem solved:

Even these sleeveless layers were pretty warm, but I liked the color combination of the navy, rust and gray:

Although, now that I think about it, I guess I could maybe have gone the Tailor-of-Panama-spy route and worn something like a guayabera & a Panama hat.  But, no, that's a different John Le Carre book and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy takes place in London, not the tropics.

So, really a trench coat (and rust heels) were my only choice:

What about you, Reader Friends?  What did you read in July?  And did it spark any outfit ideas?  If so, please share your looks below:
