Blue Dots

After another very warm weekend, the weather in Oregon has finally cooled down again.  It’s not quite fall weather yet, but it’s definitely cooler, so I’m bringing back my day dresses.  I didn’t wear them for much of the summer – they were too warm – but I’m excited to attempt to transition them for fall.  There is not much transition going on here, but I still like this dress and was happy to finally wear it:

I paired my vintage Karin Stevens dress (thrifted) with espadrille wedges (Corso Como via Piperlime), a vintage cameo bracelet and vintage carnelian earrings (via Lil’ Gypsy).  I’ve been more conscious lately of not going head-to-toe vintage/vintage-inspired.  I love vintage clothing, but head-to-toe vintage doesn’t feel right for my style.  The dress, bracelet and earrings are all vintage, but I think the shoes add a modern element.  I think a belt would help do the same; I just have a fondness for the pin-tucking at the waist and didn’t want to cover it up.

How about you all?  Do you prefer head-to-toe vintage or a mix of modern and vintage? Or maybe you prefer head-to-toe modern?

Happy Monday, All!  I hope you all had fabulous weekends!

Just a Tad Longer

I adore this dress, I do.  But, I do also wish it were just a tad longer:

Although it hides the worst of my stings and scratches, you can still see that my ankles are scratched and bordering on furry.  I paired the dress (Eight Sixty via Nordstrom) with pewter sandals (Lovely People via Ideeli), a thin brown belt (Gap), wooden earrings (Last Thursday vendor) and a watch, a bangle and a bracelet.

It was my hope that people would be too distracted by the different patterns on the dress and it’s overall awesomeness to notice that I appear to be wearing fur anklets.  Fur anklets aside, this is probably the easiest way I’ve found to wear mixed patterns – having them mixed for you in a garment takes all of the guesswork out of it.

Today’s Takeaway?  If you have patternmixophobia, try a piece that has the different patterns already mixed for you; it’s an easy way to get started.

Happy Thursday, Everyone!  I am actually out of the office tomorrow, so I’ll say Happy
Weekend now as well!

Rivers, Hornets and Maxi Skirts

Okay, I had a heck of a Labor Day Weekend.  So much so that I was out yesterday also, spending the day in a deep, Benedryl-induced sleep.  Today, though, I dragged myself to work and I wore this:

It’s the coolest thing I could find while still keeping my legs covered.  I paired my floral maxi skirt (it used to be a strapless maxi dress from Target, but I cut the top off) with a black tank (Gap), cognac belt (thrifted), black sandals (White Mountain via Macy’s), omnipresent cuff (thrifted) and hoop earrings.  I’m trying to stay cool because it’s supposed to be over 90 all this weekend and I ride home during the hottest part of the day.  And I’m trying to keep my legs covered because I can’t shave them because they’re covered in scratches.

And bruises.  And in some places, hornet stings.  See, what had happened was FB and I decided to take his kids (the FC) to the river on Sunday to cool off.  We drove to the Upper Calapooia River and saw this lovely swimming hole:

We parked, hiked down the hillside and along the river until we got to the place we saw from the road.  It was not an easy hike, especially with a five- and seven-year old, but we managed quite well – with me being the only one who fell in.  The five-year old did lose a flip-flop in the current right as we were reaching our goal, but it was otherwise pretty uneventful.  And absolutely worth the hike:

It was so gorgeous.  We (well, the boys and FB) caught crawdads and minnows and periwinkles.  We also had lunch, did some swimming and I took some photos:

When it was time to go back, FB had to carry the youngest out on his shoulders, but we managed to get back across the river okay and decided to head up to the road immediately instead of hiking along the river.  FB went first, carrying the youngest FC and I followed leading the other FC by the hand.

We had only gone a few feet up the hillside, when the oldest FC began screaming and thrashing about.  He pulled loose from my hand and I spun around looking for a snake.  Instead I felt stinging on my feet and legs and I began looking for stinging nettles, thinking I’d somehow blundered into a patch.  Instead, I saw hornets.  There were dozens of them swarming the FC and myself.

I began slapping the hornets, and I think the FC a few times on accident, and then I grabbed the FC, dragged him through the blackberry bushes and threw him up hill to his father.  By this time, the hornets had also discovered FB and the youngest FC.  We all moved up hill as quickly as we could but I had yanked the oldest FC right out of his flip-flops and it was all we could do to keep him moving.  Finally the hornets stopped chasing us and we struggled the rest of the way to the road.

We must have looked a mess coming up that hillside.  The oldest FC was sobbing uncontrollably, which was understandable as he’d been stung right on his forehead, pulled out of his shoes and forced to run, shoeless, up a blackberry covered hill.  The youngest FC was also crying and calling for his mother.  And three out of four of us were covered in cuts, scratches and stings.

We were worried about allergic reactions, but luckily the oldest FC ended up being just fine; his stings were already nearly gone by the next day.  And the youngest FC didn’t actually get stung.  However, FB and I weren’t so lucky and by Monday, both of FB’s hands had swollen to near immobility and my right foot and thigh had swollen quite badly as well.  We took Benedryl and I was able to come to work today, but my thigh is still quite swollen and I’m still very much covered in scratches, so I’ll be wearing maxi dresses and skirts for the couple days I’m here this week.

So, that was my Labor Day adventure.  It was bad, but I figure it could have been much worse, and the river really was beautiful.

I hope you all had a fabulous, and less eventful, Labor Day!

Floral, Coral and A Spot of Leopard

See what I did there?  A spot of leopard?  You’re welcome.  Also, more leopard shoes again today for which you are also welcome:

Today I paired leopard peep-toe mini-wedges with dark denim (Gap Real Straight), a ditsy floral top (Old Navy) and a coral cardigan (Beatrix Ost via Nordstrom).  I swear this cardigan is just regular coral, not neon coral, but you can’t tell it from these pictures – I think I need to adjust something on my camera but you know I don’t know what it is.  I’ll try to take a look this weekend though.

I wore my leopard peep-toes today because for me, leopard is a neutral, it’s just a more interesting neutral than brown.  Brown is the neutral I usually sub leopard in for – if I’m considering wearing brown shoes, I’ll wear leopard instead.  Not blue leopard of course; it’s awesome, but it’s probably not a neutral in anyone’s book.  For my money, leopard just adds more interest to an outfit than brown does and like brown (and orange and turquoise), it goes with everything!

What about you all?  Are you on board with leopard as a neutral?

Happy Friday, Everyone!  I hope you all have a three day weekend this weekend and that’s it’s a lovely one.  It’s supposed to get back up into the 90s here in Oregon, so I’m pretty excited!

Olive Skinnies and More Blue Shoes

Yes, I’m wearing blue shoes again today:

I told you I loved them. They just make me so darned happy.  Also making me darned happy?  This combination of royal blue and olive that I stole from one of my new favorite bloggers, BiblioMOMia.  It’s okay; I told her I was going to steal the idea because we’re cool like that.  I paired my olive skinnies (Gap) with a cream tunic (Chenault via Nordstrom Rack), blue leopard flats (Nine West “NW Naughty) and one of my favorite bracelets (thrifted).

I usually pair this blue with brown – I think it’s interesting that not once did pairing it with olive cross my mind until I saw BiblioMOMia do it.  I mean, olive and brown aren’t that far off, you’d think I’d have stumbled on it eventually.  But, I don’t think I would have.  I’m just not sure color combinations are my forte.  If you’re wondering what my forte is, it’s sass.  And being tall.  I’m really good at being tall and sassing folks.

Today’s Takeaway?  Know your strengths.  And then play to them.  I walk around tall and sassy every day.  True story.

Happy Thursday, Everyone!
