Positively Peacockian

It’s chilly and wet and I’m fairly sore from Wednesday’s Cardio Step class so today’s outfit is all about comfort:

And color.  Peacockian color, to be exact.  Yes, I did just totally make that word up, but I’m convinced it works.  I’m also convinced that this outfit works.  I’m wearing riding leggings (Vince Camuto via Nordstrom), a jersey tunic (silence + noise, thrifted), an open, jersey cardigan (Target), riding boots (Born Crown “Sosie” via Nordstrom) and a cashmere scarf (Nordstrom).

So comfortable.  And if not positively peacockian, then mostly peacockian.  I’m aware that the burnt orange scarf may not exactly fit the peacock color scheme, but 1) it’s my favorite scarf and 2) it’s orange and orange goes brilliantly with both olive and teal so I couldn’t not wear it.  Right?  Right.

The Trifecta: Thrifted Orange Polka Dots

Seriously, I’m not sure it gets any better than this thrifted orange polka dot blouse:

Well maybe pairing said blouse with the best high-waisted skirt a girl could ever hope to thrift:

What’s that?  There’s more?  Well, yes, yes, there is.  Not only am I wearing an orange (!) polka dot (!) blouse, but I’m also wearing a lovely persimmon orange (!) coat:

Basically, I loved everything about today’s outfit.  I love that I copied the idea from Ava’s assistant on the Up All Night episode from last night (borrowing ideas just makes getting dressed that much easier).  I love that the blouse is handmade, vintage and yes, thrifted.  It’s no secret that I love (love!) this skirt which is also vintage and also thrifted.  And I love this coat (it’s orange, y’all), which is non-vintage Caslon, but is also thrifted.  And my boots – you all know I love these boots (Born Crown “Sosie” via Nordstrom).  I just added a camel cardigan (v. old, via Ross) and teal belt (Target) and had an outfit that both kept me comfortable and made me happy.

Olive and Neon (and Black)

This is yet another color combination that I cribbed from Jill at Good Life for Less:

I’ve wanted to try olive and neon together ever since I saw Jill's post and today seemed like as good a time as any.  So, I paired my neon yellow top (J. Crew – thrifted) with olive skinnies (Gap) and added a black cardigan (Gap), black boots (Chinese Laundry via Piperlime) and a black and white infinity scarf (Steve Madden via Macy’s).

And I like it.  I like that the olive allows me to carry the neon yellow into fall and that the black does the same.  And although I didn’t come up with it, the combination makes perfect sense to me.  I love yellow and olive together so why not neon yellow and olive?  And although black and yellow can read a little bumblebee-esque, the neon yellow and black is definitely less so.

But, what do you all think?  Does this combination make sense to you?

Goldenrod

Goldenrod is one of my favorite colors to wear for fall:

It’s richer and easier to wear than mustard (not that that stops me from wearing mustard) and looks good paired with fall neutrals like brown, gray and even black.  Today I paired this goldenrod blouse (Gap) with Real Straight jeans (Gap), a thrifted belt and thrifted loafers.  I probably should have added a bracelet or two but didn’t think of it until I got to work and rolled up my sleeves.

I know a lot of people don’t feel like they look good in yellow and bright yellow can be difficult to wear, but I think goldenrod is rich enough that it can be flattering to a lot of skin tones.  And while it looks good with a lot of neutrals, I think it’ll also look good with some non-neutrals.  For example, I’m planning on trying it with burgundy, with red-orange and with turquoise this fall.  And I suspect that it’ll work with all of them.

Today’s Takeaway?  Afraid of yellow?  Try goldenrod – it’s (probably) versatile and flattering.

Wins and Losses

I had full intentions this weekend to finish up a skirt I’m re-making and to skinny-fy some jeans.  Neither of these things happened this weekend.  Instead, I went thrifting (as one does) and played poker with the FB and some friends.  I lost at poker, but I totally won at thrifting where I found a silk Oscar de la Renta blouse for $2.00 and a ton of other items, including this skirt:

The skirt is vintage Jantzen, and it has a bit of a 70s feel to me, so I just went with it.  I paired it with a handmade (not by me, don’t get excited) gingham blouse (thrifted) layered under a short-sleeve cashmere sweater (Forte via Ideeli) and my riding boots (Born Crown “Sosie” via Nordstrom).  I have to say, short sleeve sweaters seem far less ridiculous to me in cashmere.

In addition to poker and some very winning thrifting, I also went to Zumba for the first time this weekend and it was…schizophrenic.  Seriously, between the pelvic thrusting, the cha cha steps and the arm movements, I felt like I was all over the place.  But, it was a good workout.  I was sufficiently sore the next day, but not so sore that I couldn’t wash my hair.  I think I’ll definitely try it again this Saturday if not before.
