What Owl Dreams Are Made Of

Today's outfit features teeny, tiny gingham, polka dots and a wee little owl:

Here, you can see it better in the close up, especially the owl:

His name is Carl.  And he is thrilled to be a part of this pattern mix.



But, who can blame him?  I mean, it's tiny gingham and polka dots, Folks:

I have it on good authority that gingham and polka dots are what owl dreams are made of.

What's Up, Buttercup?

Today I'm wearing, yep, you guessed it, buttercup:

It's one of the Pantone colors for this spring and one I think is perfect for the season.  I love yellow in the spring and summer and buttercup is such a sunny yellow, it's hard not to smile when you see it.



One thing I particularly like about yellow is that it pairs well with darker neutrals, like my olive skirt and riding boots:

Blouse: Gap (similar)  Cardigan: Target
Skirt: LOFT (similar)  Boots: gifted (similar)

But, it will also pair well with lighter neutrals like white and khaki once we get closer to summer.  I don't know about you, Reader Friends, but I just love a versatile bright.

Color Confusion

Modcloth says the color of this cardigan is "rust":

But, I don't think it is.  To my mind, rust has a little more orange to it.


In fact, I thought it was brick... right up until the point when I wore it next to some bricks:

Turns out it's neither rust, nor brick.  I think it might be burgundy.  Which is good because I was hoping to find a burgundy cardigan for fall.  Of course, I was also hoping to find a rust cardigan for fall, so that search continues.


But, whatever color it is, it's perfect for fall.  And perfect mixed with a wool skirt and chambray shirt:

So, I'm not complaining about the color.  I'm just confused:

Jenna Lyons Made Me Do It

My friends hated this outfit:

Kathy said there was just a whole lot going on.

Ferge said she was fine with it until she got to the shoes and then she didn't get it.

Ferge also said she just wanted to send me home to change.  I responded with this:

Because, here's the thing.  I know this outfit is kind of crazy.  Kathy isn't wrong; there is a whole lot going on.  But, for me?  This works.

I love the combination of the blouse (vintage, thrifted) with the pants (vintage, thrifted) and Jenna Lyons says leopard is a neutral so the shoes (Nine West) totally make sense with this.  I mean, who am I to call Jenna Lyons a liar?  Nobody, that's who.  So if anyone asks, I'll just say Jenna Lyons made me do it.

Mogambo

Today I am dressed like my namesake*, Grace Kelly, in the 1953 movie, Mogambo.

See? We're practically twins.  Well, not really, but I do feel like Grace would have worn this in Africa with Clark.  Ava Gardner was also in the film and she would have scoffed at this, preferring her wiggle skirts but Grace and I know you can't properly go on safari, or ride a bike, in a wiggle skirt.

A Nod to Nautical

I was out yesterday and I completely missed the EBEW Nautical Challenge.  So, I decided to wear today what I would have worn yesterday if I hadn’t been off gallivanting:

Yep.  Sailboats.  Like Nora Bird I’m mildly obsessed with sailboat prints right now.  In my case because of a vintage skirt that I recently altered (I’ll wear it Friday, I think).  So, when I saw this blouse on “sail,” (See what I did there?  Hilarious) at Old Navy the other day, I knew I had to have it.

I paired my new sailboat blouse with my vintage man pants (thrifted), nude sandals (Banana Republic) and a few bracelets.  These pants still continue to make me very, very happy.  In fact, I even made up a song for them.  It’s called “Man Pants, Baby” and is sung to the tune of “Cat Scratch Fever.”

Olive and Neon (and Black)

This is yet another color combination that I cribbed from Jill at Good Life for Less:

I’ve wanted to try olive and neon together ever since I saw Jill's post and today seemed like as good a time as any.  So, I paired my neon yellow top (J. Crew – thrifted) with olive skinnies (Gap) and added a black cardigan (Gap), black boots (Chinese Laundry via Piperlime) and a black and white infinity scarf (Steve Madden via Macy’s).

And I like it.  I like that the olive allows me to carry the neon yellow into fall and that the black does the same.  And although I didn’t come up with it, the combination makes perfect sense to me.  I love yellow and olive together so why not neon yellow and olive?  And although black and yellow can read a little bumblebee-esque, the neon yellow and black is definitely less so.

But, what do you all think?  Does this combination make sense to you?

Wins and Losses

I had full intentions this weekend to finish up a skirt I’m re-making and to skinny-fy some jeans.  Neither of these things happened this weekend.  Instead, I went thrifting (as one does) and played poker with the FB and some friends.  I lost at poker, but I totally won at thrifting where I found a silk Oscar de la Renta blouse for $2.00 and a ton of other items, including this skirt:

The skirt is vintage Jantzen, and it has a bit of a 70s feel to me, so I just went with it.  I paired it with a handmade (not by me, don’t get excited) gingham blouse (thrifted) layered under a short-sleeve cashmere sweater (Forte via Ideeli) and my riding boots (Born Crown “Sosie” via Nordstrom).  I have to say, short sleeve sweaters seem far less ridiculous to me in cashmere.

In addition to poker and some very winning thrifting, I also went to Zumba for the first time this weekend and it was…schizophrenic.  Seriously, between the pelvic thrusting, the cha cha steps and the arm movements, I felt like I was all over the place.  But, it was a good workout.  I was sufficiently sore the next day, but not so sore that I couldn’t wash my hair.  I think I’ll definitely try it again this Saturday if not before.
