You will probably not be surprised to learn that I have no
idea what I’m doing when it comes to dressing myself. I mean, I’ve figured out buttons and zippers pretty
well, but figuring out what combination of items to button or zipper onto my
body is a struggle. For example, I’m
just wearing a dress today, but went through three or four iterations of
accessories before landing on this:
The dress (Target) actually used to have a greige skirt (you
can see it here), but I dyed it because I don’t like greige. The accessories I finally settled on are a
tri-color belt (thrifted), red-orange beaded necklace (street fair) and leopard
peep-toe mini wedges. But, seriously, it
was a struggle even though the dress just pulls on!
I don’t know why selecting clothes is so much work for
me. I don’t know if it’s because my
closet is too big (possibly), or maybe it’s too small (less probable). Or, maybe it’s because I don’t have a clearly
defined style. I think if I just decided
that “boho chic” was my thing and didn’t purchase or wear anything that didn’t
meet that aesthetic that getting dressed might be easier. Instead I have Personal Style ADD, dressing
one day in all neutrals and the next in three different patterns and four
different colors. For example, here are
last week’s looks (note the lack of a cohesive theme):
Now, I don’t think any
of you who read my blog are under the delusion that you’re reading the blog of
a fabulously put together blogger. But,
if you are, I apologize for bursting your bubble. In truth, I’m just feeling my way along,
tossing a bunch of stuff on the bed and seeing what sticks. For those of you who suspected that was my
preferred methodology, you were right, and I appreciate you sticking around in
spite of that.
Happy Wednesday, Everyone!

LOL I read your post and felt as though I could have written the same thing. My husband finds me batty because I will put on a dress in two minutes flat, but then spend 40 minutes in the mirror trying different necklaces, belts and shoes. And if I repeat an outfit 100%, well that doesn't work because it doesn't seem to be as fabulous the second go-round.
ReplyDeleteGreat job with the dying, I far better like the new skirt color!
Clearly there is a cohesive theme: you wore some pants and some skirts and managed to get out of bed and get dressed each day. I'd say you're doing GREAT! (Okay, partially I say this to make myself feel better about operating on the same scheme, but that doesn't change that you did - all caps, my friend - GREAT!)And besides that, you always manage to look fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI think it's good not to stick to one look all the time though, you experiment with different looks and have fun, life's too short for anything less.
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely have fun with your looks and not stick to only one style. That makes it fun and inspiring!
ReplyDeleteGood call on dyeing that skirt - the color looks great with the orange-red necklace. What you call lack of cohesive theme, I call having fun with your clothes and enjoying variety ... :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Carrie -- you're always looking great, that's your cohesive theme, and you like trying new pieces every day. Sounds perfect!
ReplyDeleteAs someone else who's just now figuring out how to dress myself, I love how you're articulating your learning process. Your thoughts on proportion are fascinating to me, and rather than being a drawback, the variety means that you are finding many ways to dress well - another of the many things which make it so much fun to read.
ReplyDeleteThe end result always looks good, Gracey. I think the majority of us are figuring things out as we go. That's what makes it fun:)
ReplyDeleteI think I know where you are coming from. I have my up days and down days (lately mostly down, I think I need to go for a major shopping spree!!). But I enjoy reading your blog and love your outfits. I can easily identify with you and I can continue being myself and not a version of a very "put together blogger"!
ReplyDeleteThree things: (A) that skirt wasn't greige before, it was bleaaaah. (Also, greige is a hideous word. (B)Your necklace is awesome-sauce. And (C) your style is obviously Gracey-style, which is one of my favorites, since it comes with huge smiles and an aura of general happiness that make me feel like you would be a great person to meet (always important for someone with anxiety disorder).
ReplyDeletei think we are all finding our way! but i think you do a fabulous job every day! i love this dress on you and the necklace is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteOh, greige. That got me laughing. I know what you mean about accessories, too. I feel like I spend longer on that quite often because it just isn't *quite* what I want and I'm unsatisfied. I think you eventually landed on a winner this time around!
ReplyDeleteI thought you were a fabulously put together blogger, and I still do. I don't have you in a style box, because I think you can do and DO do different looks depending on your mood, but when I think of your style, I think it's bright, bold, flow-y (too bad that's not a word because it's the one I want), non-fussy, and perfectly you.
ReplyDeleteI hope you believe me when I say that I prefer a woman who dresses for her mood rather than to meet some ideal standard of blogger beauty. I like that you wear what makes you happy. I do the same thing and it's that comraderie and glimpse into a slightly less varnished style blog that draws me back to your site! PS. I love that you dyed the skirt to make it a color you like better.
ReplyDeleteI read your blog because I love to see what you are going to put together each day. And most blogs that I love (yours included) are those of people who have an eclectic style. It is always a surprise what you will be wearing and how you will be wearing it. And I get much more inspiration from blogs like yours. Keep doing what you do girl. I will always come back for more.

Personally? I don't think I'm reading the blog of a fabulously put-together blogger. I think I'm reading the blog of a very intelligent sulfur cockatoo with a deep love of vintage clothing. Have I been wrong all this time?
