Branching Out

I tend to be a creature of habit when it comes to buying clothes.  I stick with the stores that I know (so much so that my dad asked me the other day if my blog was sponsored by Nordstrom - he's very funny) because I know how they'll fit me.  This is especially true when it comes to brands that carry "tall" clothes.  Because, as all tall women know, there is tall and then there is "tall."

Unfortunately, due to this reliance on the brands I know, I haven't really tried a lot of other tall lines.  But, today I am branching out.

You see that wonderfully stripe-y tunic?  It's from Chadwick's of Boston.


I know!  I had no idea that Chadwick's carried tall clothes either.  But, they do.  Like this tunic:

When Chadwick's offered me an item to review, I was a little hesitant because their "tall" starts at 5'7" which isn't always long enough for me.  But, as you can see, this tunic is plenty long, covering my bum and everything!

Which, given how my bum resists coverage by most tunics, is a miracle.  A Chadwick's miracle!


Now, I can't say how Chadwick's will work for women taller than myself, but if you're between 5'7" and 6', I'd say give them a try.  They don't have a huge selection, but they carry good, classic pieces.  I especially like their basics, like my tunic, and I'm drooling over this fabulous plaid blazer!

A Discussion on Hair & the Emjoi eRase e60

I love summertime, but it definitely brings some trials and tribulations along with the sunshine and barbecues.  It is an especially trying time for me due to my oh-so-special combination of hyper-active sweat glands and equally hyper-active hair follicles.

Because, here's the what, folks.  Below the waist?  Yeah, I basically look like this:

Except with, you know, 100% more clothes.

Seriously though, I have coarse, dark hair and I have a lot of it.  I tend to let it run wild in the winter for the usual reasons of laziness/added warmth/no one sees it anyway.  Unfortunately, during the summer I'm forced to have a less laissez-faire attitude about the whole thing.

Sure, I'm still lazy, but I don't need the added warmth.  In fact, I need to stay cool because, well, sweat.  That means tank tops, shorter skirts & the occasional bathing suit.  And no hair-hiding tights.  All of which eliminates the "no one sees it anyway" excuse.  And so, even for my hippie-raised self, summer means hair removal.

But I don't like it.  It's been my experience that most hair removal methods are messy, smelly and/or painful.  Both my skin and my hair tend to react badly to most every hair removal technique I've tried.  In fact, the only place I remove hair with any regularity is my brows.  Because, let's be honest, only two people have ever pulled off the uni-brow:

Still, with my half-Wookie heritage (how do you think I got so tall?), hair removal is a must and I am always looking for new ways to remove hair that doesn't make me stabby and/or sad.

Enter the Emjoi eRase e60:

I was given the opportunity to try this adorable little epilator just in time for swimsuit season.  It may look dainty and cute, but this little guy has 60, yes, 60, tweezer action discs in there.


It is cute though, right?

So, how did this little cutie do against my Sasquatchean hair growth?  It did... okay.  Although it has a setting for "coarse" hair, it didn't make much of a dent in mine.  I had to go over the same area multiple times and there were still some hold-outs.  And that was just on my legs.  I didn't dare tackle my bikini line with this little guy; that wouldn't have been fair!

That being said, where it did work, my skin has been soft and hair free for over a week now, which is basically a miracle.  And, on less coarse hair, it's great.  Not too painful and smooth, smooth, smooth.

So, let's look at the pros and cons.

Pros

It's cute.

It's small enough to handle easily.

It works well on fine hair.

It's pretty gentle; not too painful at all.

It comes with a sensitive attachment for use on the face.

Erase Glide Technology allows the it to be used back and forth or in a circular motion.

Cons

It has to be plugged in which limits maneuverability somewhat.

It really doesn't work well on coarse hair, even on the coarse setting.

As you can see, there are far more pros than cons about this epilator.  If you're not half Bigfoot, and are looking for a way to remain hair free for up to 6 weeks, I definitely recommend it.  You can learn more, and get your own, at www.emjoi.com.  I'd also recommend this review of the product; the reviewer has fine hair and it seems to really have worked well for her.

As for me, I'll probably continue my infrequent, half-hearted shaving and just wear my swimsuit only in the privacy of my backyard.

The Cappelli Pack A Hat

The other day I was offered a Cappelli Straworld, Inc. Pack a Hat for the summer and I was very excited.  I am definitely a sun lover, but I try to limit my sun exposure with sunblock and large, dramatic hats like the Cappelli Pack a Hat.  I have several wide-brimmed hats and was thrilled to be able to add the navy one to my collection.

Coral, Olive & Taupe-A-Dots

My new FRAAS scarf is taupe, with polka dots:

Of course, I immediately began referring to it as my "taupe-a-dot" scarf.  Because I am ridiculous.

But, this scarf isn't.  For a color that really isn't much of a color, I find that taupe is working well in my wardrobe.  Like this outfit, with coral and olive:

Of course, if taupe polka dots aren't your thing, the scarf is available in bright, spring-y colors too, such as turquoise, yellow and pink.  I'm a bit surprised that I didn't pick one of the brighter colors when I was offered a sample, but I really do love the taupe so far.

MarketPlace: Handwork of India

The other day I was contacted by a company called MarketPlace: Handwork of India with the offer to review one of their products.  I had never heard of this company so I did a little research and they’re pretty amazing.  They are a nonprofit Alternative Trade and Development Organization that works with 480 women artisans around Mumbai, India, to produce clothing and home décor items showcasing authentic techniques such as hand batik, ikat and hand embroidery.

The women work in supportive, non-exploitative work environments in the form of 14 cooperatives around Mumbai, which the women organize and manage.  And, addition to the much needed employment, MarketPlace works in conjunction with another nonprofit organization in Mumbai, SHARE, to provide social programs to the artisans.  And the women in turn use their own social program, Social Action, to get involved in their communities, tackling everything from garbage collection to domestic abuse.  

So, yeah, pretty amazing.

And so are the items they produce.  Like the Majuli Tunic:

I don’t wear a lot of purple, but I love the dusty plum of the tunic.  And I love that the embroidery inspired me to pair the tunic with a mustard scarf:

Really, what's not to love about a company that empowers women and inspires the wearing of mustard?!  That's right, nothing.

Size Up and Get Sweaty – Marika Tek Review

Some time ago, the lovely people at Marika were kind enough to send me some of their Marika Miracles workout pants.  I love those pants; they are my go to workout pants (you know, when I work out).  So, I was absolutely thrilled when they offered to send me this workout tee*:

It is the Venus Crew Neck Dry Wik Short Sleeve Tee and like the pants, it helps keep my oh-so-very-sweaty self comfortable when I’m working out.  Even having previous experience with Marika’s Dry-Wik technology, I was a little apprehensive about this review because they sent me purple and I prefer working out in black, to hide the sweat.  But, I gave the purple a shot and I am pleased to report it was only a little discolored by the end of my workout:

Really, my only complaint about this tee, and it’s a minor one, is that it seems to run a bit small.  But, that could just be because while I don’t mind working out in tight pants (as is obvious in the photo above), I try to avoid tight shirts.  If you feel the same, I’d definitely recommend sizing up.  For reference, I’m wearing an XL.

I’m Famous, Y’all!

I have been telling my nephews since they were babies that I am famous.  They were skeptical, even as swaddling infants.  Now, however, I have proof.  You see this book?

My friend Sally, of Already Pretty, wrote this book.  And it’s fabulous.  It’s all about dressing the body you have but with your style, not someone else’s.  However, the best part about this book, at least for me, is that I’m in it!  That’s right, Sally included photos of some of her fellow bloggers in her gorgeous book and I’m one of them!  Which means that finally (finally!) my nephews are being forced to recognize my famosity (totally a word, I don’t care what spell check says).

Just a Small Town Girl

I’ve been slow getting on the “statement necklace” train because while I like the look on others, I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off.  So, when the lovely people at Maurice’s offered me the choice of an item to review, I figured it was as good an opportunity as any to try a statement necklace.  This statement necklace, in fact:

   

Although I’m not much for neutrals, I like this necklace because it is neutral.  It offers me a nice, subtle way to try this trend and I played to that by pairing the necklace with a terra cotta-colored dress (Target) and adding other neutral accessories.   I do think it will provide a nice pop in an all-black outfit as well.

When Maurice’s contacted me, I was pretty excited being as my mule’s name is Maurice and because we have one of their stores here in Salem.  That second fact makes Maurice’s feel local to me, even though they are a national chain with over 800 stores nationwide.   And I like that feeling.  I also like that they carry cute, on-trend clothes in up to size 26 and shoes up to size 11.

And I like that they provide “fast fashion” for my small town. Now, I know a lot has been written lately about fast fashion and how it rots your soul.  Luckily for my soul, I’m not much of a fan of fast fashion; it’s often too young for my tastes.  But, when I do want to try something out, fast fashion stores like Maurice’s come in handy.

But, if I do shop for these trends, I like to do it in person, because it completely defeats the purpose to buy something inexpensive and then have to pay shipping on it.  Unfortunately, because I do live in a fairly small town we don’t have access to a lot of fashion here, fast or otherwise.   We don’t have a Zara or an H&M or even a Gap (we had one; it went away).  But, we do have a Maurice’s and luckily for me, they carry easy, affordable, on-trend items like this necklace.

Wimpy Webbing and a Smartdogs Review

Last week we talked about the fact that I don't really wear pants (preferring skirts, not nudity (thanks, Chelsea!)).  Today we're talking about the fact that I also don't really wear flip flops.  Or even sandals that that come between the toe.  It has nothing to do with Tim Gunn saying that women shouldn't wear flip-flops because they're so hard to look graceful in.  Though I totally agree with that point.  No, I don't wear flip-flops because I have wimpy webbing between my toes.

I can't wear something between my toes for very long before it begins to hurt.  And its still sore the next day.  Of course, if I wanted to, I could force my self to wear flip-flops and build up a callous there.  But, as sexy as a between-the-toes callous sounds, I just generally forgo thong-style sandals.

That is, until I received these slippers from Smartdogs:

They are the Uplift Women's Thong Slipper and they are fabulous.  The mesh on the foot bed is soft and comfortable and antibacterial.  The sole of the slipper is both cushioned and grippy (totally a word) making them perfect for wearing inside and out.  And, for extra comfort, the heel is gel padded.  I especially like that aspect as I tend to strike with my heels when I walk.

Most importantly though, the thong doesn't irritate my wimpy webbing at all.  I can hardly even tell that it's there, even when I walk.  And I love that.
