Five for Friday: Peach Echo

Now that it's finally, truly, summer, I am looking to wear more summery colors.  Colors like coral, or, as Pantone likes to call it, Peach Echo.  And I figured that I haven't done a Five for Friday post recently, so I thought I'd do one for Coral, I mean Peach Echo (but really, I mean Coral and I suspect Pantone does too).

Here my current five favorite Coral Peach Echo pieces for this summer:

1. Target Women's Floppy Hat - Hats are a great way to protect yourself from the sun.  And cute, striped, floppy hats are the best way to protect yourself from the sun.  That's science.

2. Wayf Blouson Midi Dress - Lightweight, gorgeous color, midi length, this dress has it all.  It would be perfect for a summer wedding.

3. Kate Spade New York Kensley Sandals - Neutral sandals with a coral heel?  Yes, please!  It's a bit spendy, but I think it's worth it.

4. Old Navy Mid-Rise Pixie Pants - These pants are fantastic for the office in the summer.  And, they are available in Tall as well as Regular and Petite sizes, so, yay!

5. Banana Republic Mixed Media Earrings - I have these in a navy/turquoise colorway and they are awesome in person.  They are big and bold and perfect for a summer date night!

Nubby Studs

Last time I wore this skirt, I wore it with chambray.  This time around, I went with blush:

All The Volume

I try to avoid tight-fitting clothes during the summer, especially here in Pittsburgh where the humidity is so high we have thunderstorms nearly every afternoon.  Instead, I reach for loose-fitting pieces like these cropped pants:

And instead of offsetting their volume with a fitted top, I chose to wear a loose-fitting top as well:

Because, sometimes, I like to wear all the volume.

Wrinkles and Rhinestones

Linen is great for summer; so light... so airy... so wrinkly:

Seriously.  Those wrinkles are just from bending over to buckle my sandals.  That's ridiculous.


Still, it is a nice cool fabric and it looks good with rhinestones:

And, people expect linen to be wrinkled, so they're probably not talking about you behind your back.  Or at least not to say anything other than "man, wrinkles and rhinestones are a fly combination":

Flowers

This dress is covered in flowers:

Because, as you probably guessed, the theme is flowers:

I actually own a lot (no, really, A LOT) of floral dresses, but this one is the most summery.  And it has pockets:

So, yeah, it's basically the best.

The dress is thrifted and I paired it with a thrifted belt, thrifted shoes and a cameo I bought at a rummage sale:

The brooch is etched on the back: Dick Puckett, 1958.  I guess that's the maker?  If so, I'd like to thank Mr. Puckett for making such a lovely piece.

Get the Look

Guess What?! Culottes!!

Guess what?

If you guessed culottes, you're either very smart or very literate (both good things):

Because I am, in fact, wearing CULOTTES!!!!

Yes, this is the best picture I've ever taken.

Man, I love, love, love me some culottes.  When I was younger, I had a white pair with a rainbow embroidered across the pelvis and down the legs.  They were a bit of 70s heaven and because of them, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for culottes.


In fact, I've been looking to thrift a pair for the past year or so, but without any luck.  Happily my Mom is basically a thrifting goddess and found this pair for me:

They make me smirk with joy!

Now, don't get me wrong; I recognize that culottes aren't the most figure-flattering things in the world.  But, they're beyond great for bike riding and I feel slouchy and cool in them, as opposed to sloppy and plump.

And this particular pair not only makes me feel magically cool, they have both pockets and awesome buttons:

Man, I love these things.

Double Cream

Double cream is hard to photograph, y'all.  In the sun my outfit is completely blown out, but the shade is a bit dark:

And then, to compound matters, at some point I made this face:

I think that might be my listening face, but it looks like I'm mad as hell.  I wasn't, but good luck convincing my face of that!


Eventually I got it together (stopped listening?) and quit looking as though I wanted to throttle someone:

The Human Highlighter

I'm basically a human highlighter in this dress, but that doesn't stop me from wearing it:

It's just so comfortable.  And bright.  I mean, does it get any better than both bright and comfortable?  (Hint: the answer is no).

I did tone it down a little bit with my increasingly ubiquitous olive jacket:

I swear, I don't know why more people don't pair neon peach and olive together.  Pro Tip: Few things help lessen the human highlighter aspect of neon peach more than olive.  Of course, olive jacket or no, I'm still highly visible in this outfit & therefore am linking up to Visible Monday at Not Dead Yet Style.

Black and Summery

I know a lot of people wear black through summer and somehow manage to do so without dissolving into a puddle of sweat, but I am not one of those people.  Therefore, I tend to avoid wearing black during the warmer months.  That is, unless I thrift an irresistible skirt that manages to be both black and summery all at once:

What makes this skirt irresistible to me?  Well, although the print is kind of strange, I also find it oddly compelling:

Also, although it is nice and lightweight and therefore totally summer-appropriate (totally), I think the weird print will work well into fall as well.  I'd like to do better about having pieces that are good for multiple seasons. 

And, last, but certainly not least, this skirt lends itself to being paired with both black and brown and I'll be darned if I don't love mixed neutrals:

Gracie the Gravedigger

I felt a little like Rosie the Riveter in this outfit:

It's the combination of the red head-scarf and the denim dress, I guess.

Of course, I didn't notice until I was already at work and then it was too late; this was happening:

I think, too, that I didn't really think of Rosie the Riveter when I was putting on the scarf because I've always associated her with my sister, Rosey, and not with myself.

As far as a I know, there is no iconic women's role model doing a traditional man's job with my name.  Of course, if there were, it'd probably be Gracie the Gravedigger, or something equally glamorous.

Of course, the iconic figure would wear more sensible shoes, but it's summer and I like these.

The Cappelli Pack A Hat

The other day I was offered a Cappelli Straworld, Inc. Pack a Hat for the summer and I was very excited.  I am definitely a sun lover, but I try to limit my sun exposure with sunblock and large, dramatic hats like the Cappelli Pack a Hat.  I have several wide-brimmed hats and was thrilled to be able to add the navy one to my collection.

Of course, what does one wear with a large, dramatic hat but a caftan?  I love swanning about the back yard in my vintage caftans, shaded from the Oregon sun by my Cappelli Straworld hat.  Not a fan of caftans?  You're missing out.  But, the good news is that large, dramatic hats also look fabulous with maxi dresses. Summer Maxi

People swear that maxi skirts and dresses still keep you cool in hot weather.  I was skeptical (so much fabric!) but, I thought I'd give it a try today:

I paired my black maxi (Target (similar, tall available)) with a black and white striped tee (Old Navy (similar)) and brightly colored sandals (Ella Moss via Piperlime (similar color)).

I also added a braided belt (thrifted) and a vintage squash blossom necklace:

And, I have to admit, wearing a maxi was pretty okay for most of the day.  Right up until I got on my bike to ride home.  Riding a bike in a maxi skirt is never great.  Riding a bike in a maxi skirt in 90+ weather is even less great. But, I will say that the maxi was a great choice for the air conditioned office; my legs often get chilled and they didn't at all today.

So, the final verdict?  Maxi's are pretty great for summer, as long as you're not trying to ride a bike in them:
