Tulips and Diamonds

The other day on You Look Fab, Angie posited that the popularity of prints and patterns was on the wane and asked if the “pattern party” were over for us.  I said that I thought so, that I was buying fewer prints lately.  But, I realized that I’m just buying fewer clothes in general (an unhappy side effect of my Nosh Opping Expedition) and that I still love prints as much as ever.

What made me come to that realization?  This outfit:

I think that if I were over prints, I’d have just paired a plain black blazer with this tulip print dress (handmade, thrifted via Better Bargains aka The Sticky Thrift Store).  But, instead, I paired my tulips with a vintage, diamond print blazer (Anne Klein via Salvation Army) because, given the option, I’m almost always going to choose to mix prints over pairing a print and a solid.  I did add some solid tights (Spanx via Nordstrom) and booties (Nine West “Darsy) though.  And I added my Eye of Sauron belt (vintage via Goodwill) because, well, what else would one wear with tulips and diamonds?

So, yes, it appears that I am still firmly Team Prints and Patterns.  But, what about you, Reader Friends?  Are you over prints or still on board?  Or, were you never on board?

Happy Tuesday, All!

Oh, yeah, even though today is Tuesday, I wore this yesterday and felt quite visible so I’m linking up to Patti’s Visible Monday over at Not Dead Yet Style.  Better late than never, right?

  2. I say YES to all things printed. They keep outfits from being boring. This printed mixture with your blazer and dress totally suits you. Very cute! Heather

  3. Over prints???? I didn't realize there could be such a thing! Especially when you pair them together so well and lovely-like you've done here! Sure solids are safer, but prints have more fun!

  4. I'm definitely not giving up prints anytime soon, especially since I've started getting a knack for mixing them! :)

  6. I have actually made a bigger effort to add prints into my closet this year. I do find myself waning on them, but I have an equal amount of print and solids I think.

  8. I am only just dipping my toes into the world of print mixing, I'm still much more comfortable sticking to one print in an outfit, and even more so pairing solids (because that's easy!) I don't mind if I'm not 100% on-trend, though, so even if they are on the way out, I'll keep playing.

  11. Prints 4-evah, although heaven knows I have enough solids as well.

I love how you mix prints!

  14. Well, the question I am asking myself is - would I give a tinker's cuss if patterns and prints were out of fashion? And the answer would, of course, be NO! I love patten and print and colour and I can't see that changing. Don't you go changing either, Gracey, you mix patterns brilliantly. The dress and jacket are made for each other! xxxxx

  15. I'm not as bold as others with my mixing of patterns, but I am definitely still on board! Prints are too fun to abandon.

    That blazer is fabulous!

  17. Super to meet you, Gracey. You look incredible ... there's some skillful print mixing going on there, with a way-pretty dress to begin with. Like prints, love solids, but like mixing prints better than prints with solids. If that makes any sense. It's a skill I'm learning slowly, though, 'cause I'm old! (That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.)
I'll be glad to see more posts from you!

  18. I'm still totally in love with prints and not ready to give them up at all. I like the specialness of a unique print and some of my favorite shirts have been patterned ones.
PS I love the diamond print jacket.

  19. I want to know where Angie got here information, because surely she didn't ask me! I am still absolutely loving prints and print mixing. In fact, I just saw a feature in Lucky about "print blocking" like color-blocking with big bold prints.

Your outfit proves just how amazing a print mixed outfit can really be!

  21. I am not overly confident at pattern mixing - you however should win a prize in pattern mixing. These two prints go together so well.

  22. This is kind of funny because I have been on the hunt for some floral tops here in the past few weeks. I don't think they are on the way out at all.
You look gorgeous in this outfit. The print mixes couldn't be any better than if you had purchased it from retail as an outfit. Beautiful.

  23. Now this is my kind of pattern mixing! I love the mix of polka dots & tulips.
And yes, I'm still totally in love with the idea of pattern play (although this winter weather is making my oufits a bit more drab/boring lately).

  24. It's kind of weird to say that patterns are out--like, ALL patterns? Sure, some patterns are have their fad times, like ikat and the so-called "tribal" thing (to that terminology, bleck), but c'mon, that's a lot of ground to cover, like saying music isn't cool anymore.
