Why Not Try: Printed Pants

Like colored pants (or pants of color, if you prefer), printed pants can be a bit daunting, especially if you have bossy thighs.  For example, I’ve always liked the look, but my thighs were against it; they kept threatening to secede if I put them in a print.  But, finally, last summer we reached an agreement (The Printed Pants Accord of 2012?  Perhaps you’ve heard of it?  No?  Well, it’s totally a thing) and I started wearing printed pants.  And even my thighs had to admit they’re kind of fun.

Happily, it looks like printed pants are going to continue to be on-trend for 2013 so I’m here to encourage you to try printed pants as well.  I think you’ll find that they’re easier to wear (even with mutinous thighs) than you thought.

And, they’re pretty versatile.  They can be worn loose or tight.  They can be worn long or cropped.  You can choose a bold print or a more subdued print.  And they can be worn with neutrals, brights and, of course, other prints.

Here are some ways I’ve worn my printed pants:

Left: Tiny polka dots with paisley & leopard.          Right: Dark animal print with printed shirt.

Left: Vintage, checked pants with butterfly tunic.          Right: Floral pastel Ralph Lauren & gray.

And here are some of my favorite looks from Pinterest:

Love printed pants, but not sure where to find them?  Great news; they’re practically everywhere!  Because they are on-trend, many retailers are offering printed pant options, including in Tall and Plus sizes.  And, they’re also pretty easy to thrift; about half of my pairs are thrifted.

If thrifting isn’t your thing, here are some reasonably priced options that I’m currently loving:

Wit & Wisdom Indigo Floral Skinny - via Nordstrom

The Diva Skinny Ankle Pant - via Old Navy

Slim Cropped Print Pant - via Gap

Jessica Simpson "Kiss Me" Print Zip Ankle Pant - via Nordstrom

As you can see, there are many, many ways to wear a printed pant.  And many, many printed pants to choose from.  So, what do you say?  Will you be giving printed pants a try?

Happy Monday, All!

  1. Heh. Looks like I took your advice a few hours before you gave it; I got a pair of printed skinny jeans from Gap's last chance clearance rack. I hope mine look as awesome on me as yours do on you, although I, too, have difficult thighs. Mine don't try to secede, but they are definitely querulous.

  2. My thighs are fairly compliant (oh man that sounds like a major confession) but my eyes were not ready for this, until I saw your anthology of looks. So, so good. And the indigo florals look like a terrific start.

  4. you looks are great. Love the tiny polka dots. Um, I have way more printed pants than I care to admit. My hubby about died when I came through the door after work - I had leopard pants and a graphic bow sweater. He said way over the top! I said it's everywhere in the blog world. He said - does that make it right? I said - you bet!! I'm loving those red dotted old navy pants too, hoping for a sale

  6. My favourite thing about printed pants is how they are automatically party pants. Even my seditionist thighs agree. Well, maybe not with each other, but with printed pants between them, a certain harmony can be achieved.

I'm happy to see the butterfly tunic again!

  8. I adore printed pants!! I never have great luck with finding pairs that fit though. Downside to thrifting is being limited to what is there. I have found a lot cute printed capri style, but no full length pants.

  9. Have you tried NYDJ (Not your daughters Jeans)? Being tall and curvy I used to HATE ALL PANTS! I went years only owning 1 pair that I never wore, until I found NYDJ in tall. They have a higher rise so they don't scoot off my muffin top, but come in a bunch of really great styles including coated, skinny, and PRINT! Funnily enough my mom and I both wear them, so they really are her daughter's jeans! haha.

  11. I saw some of the printed pants on your pinterest feed yesterday, they are lovely aren't they? I don't have any, but I should rectify this and keep my eyes peeled in the charity shops. I love the pastel outfit. x

  13. I've been on the fence with this trend for a while, but you really know how to make printed pants wearable and not kooky! I really love the the dark animal print ones you have, and the Nordstrom floral skinnies :)

  14. You have strengthened my resolve to get on the printed-pants train. I picked up some cheap thrift-store jeans last week that I plan on printing myself--I've seen a few DIYs out there. Haven't decided yet exactly what I want to do. Tiny hearts? An allover circle print? But I'm dying to try it.

  15. Bossy, difficult, querulous, seditionist - thighs can be really tricky customers, can't they?! Mine certainly like to make their presence felt... So you know my struggles with pants, I won't go on about it. But oh my goodness, how great do you look in these patterned pants, Gracey?! Love your round up of looks, I think the animal print and the floral pastel versions are my favourites. xxxx

  16. I'm also a bit if a giant so I rarely buy target pants from the jr department but I found a great pair of floral print jeans on the sale rack there for $11 yesterday. My target had a bunch of pairs and while I didn't love the number on the size tag 13 instead of 10 the fit well and are comfy.

  18. I love colored pants but have been a bit afraid to try them myself. Love uni colors, also bright ones, but printed is a bit too much for me. You can wear them, though! Lovely!!
