I learned a lot from wearing this outfit today:
One, in spite of the neutral color palette, this outfit
attracts a lot of attention. From
whispers of “look at those shoes” as I passed by, to concern that I was
interviewing for a different job.
Two, I am apparently considered by my peers to be more
fashionable than professional; today’s outfit was described as “professional-fashionable”
as opposed to my “usual fashionable-fashionable.” I’ll take it.
Three, when worn over black tights, these shoes kind of look
like the wedge high-top sneakers I’ve been trying to avoid. Heh.
Four, this skirt is not great for bike riding. It’s so full that the wind kept catching it
and I looked like a giant crow or bat trying to ride a bike. And, with my black coat, I also felt a little
witchy. My friends are always
threatening to drive behind me blasting the Wicked Witch’s theme from The
Wizard of Oz. Today would have been a
great day for that.
All that for what’s basically a very simple outfit. It’s a harlequin sweater vest (vintage J. G.
Hook via Goodwill) layered over a black turtleneck (Gap) with a black skirt
(Ralph Lauren via Goodwill), black tights (Hue via Nordstrom Rack) and Matiko “Ella” wedges
(Ideeli). I also added a belt (vintage
brass), earrings (gifted) and the titular hearts in the form of a heart
necklace from ModCloth ( v. old).
And I think I liked it.
I think it’s unusual but I also think it’s kind of cool. But, honestly, I don’t know; I’m having the
hardest time dressing myself lately.
Happy Tuesday, All!
Gracey

i am too...maybe it's the season! anyways, i think it would be hilarious to have that theme song playing while you bike...i like that idea!
ReplyDeleteYou look so cute and I love that wonderful necklace.
ReplyDeleteoops, i did think they were wedge sneakers at first, but my initial reaction was CUTE! i love the sweater....would love to see it without sleeves when temps warm up :)

Ooh, I like this! It feels very Alice in Wonderland to me. :)
ReplyDeleteThose are some wicked cool shoes.
ReplyDeleteYou rock! Its great! You are wearing two things that I have been looking at, putting in virtual shopping carts, and walking away from for a long time. Argyle harlequin print sweaters and a full, below the knee skirts. That's it, I'm doing it! The next time that argyle print is in my cart, I'm pressing the purchase button. Oh, and I too have been trying not to buy wedge sneakers, even though I am drawn to them for some reason. Kind of like the bad boyfriend you know is going to humiliate you and end up making you feel bad....but yet.........
ReplyDeleteI love your harlequin sweater vest! And the whole outfit. Definitely professional fashionable:)
ReplyDeleteI love it! I think with the lighter sole on the shoes you kind of need to wear something with some light color somewhere else and I think you did just that. It looks good too! Sometimes we can over think things. Sometimes I tell myself that I know nothing about style, but then I just keep going and think, Oh well, it's only really for entertaining myself first and foremost.
ReplyDeleteIf I worked in a professional or conservative place I'd love to be called Professional Fashionable. I wouldn't have it any other way! ;)
Shame the outfit gave you trouble while biking, because it seems so perfect otherwise! I just thrifted a similar skirt today (has embroidery on it, but really, it does remind me of this one, honest) and I suspect it's going to go all Wicked Witch on me in the slightest breeze. And now I find I like that idea, possibly too much.
ReplyDeleteGreat, great shoes as well.
Titular! Any post with the word titular in it has my vote for Blog Post of the Week!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if this outfit is professional-fashionable. I think it's your trademark stylish-with-clever-layering-and-great-footwear-and-accessories. Snappy, no? Your "kind of cool" says it better...
Oh and the titular hearts are fabulous, of course! xxxx
Simple and simply gorgeous, Gracey. I love a harlequin print like this one, and yes those shoes are show-stoppers!
ReplyDeleteyou have a FABULOUS sense of style! i am so excited to follow you.
ReplyDeletei hope you follow back so we can stay in touch xox
You certainly don't seem to be having any trouble putting outfits together, that's for sure. I, too am trying to avoid the heeled sneaker, biz, although Julie of Orchid Grey is tempting me a little bit, I must admit. xo
ReplyDeleteSo I totes thought that those were wedged high tops! I think they're totally super duper cool work like this! :)

That is a beautiful necklace! I think that a lot of people associate black with professional. Either way, "professional-fashionable" or "fashionable-fashionable", This outfit is great:)
ReplyDeleteLook at those shoes! I wish I could see them better, but they look cool. And I love the harlequin vest - how fun!
ReplyDeleteWhen I ride my bike with a skirt on, I pin the front and back hem together between my legs. It stops it from blowing around and compromising my modesty. ; )
I love this! Fierce silhouette, awesome harlequin print, excellent textures of the skirt and strappy shoes. I think you are so cool, Gracey - you look amazing!
ReplyDeleteI like it, if my opinion matters. I'm imagining wearing it on a motorcycle. :)
ReplyDeleteYour shoes are fantastic! I'd love to see them again soon! Of course you have the best legs for them too! Your outfit is beautiful, the skirt is really gorgeous on you! It takes someone with your height to carry off that length as elegantly as you!
ReplyDeleteYou are funny, I love that theme song. I thought that they were high top high heeled sneakers, I think you should get a pair...soon. dawn suitcase vignettes xo
ReplyDeleteI know I look real, or possibly even TOO, professional when my boss follows me around asking me what I'm doing for lunch. If I wear a suit, peeps check on my wearabouts every hour :P You do look very chic and interview-ready, Gracey :) I love this outfit BTW, and don't see it as unusual for your style aesthetic, other than it's a bit more monochrome than usual. The shoes, the necklace, and the thrifted sweater still very much have that Gracey-vibe.
ReplyDeleteLove those shoes! Too cool. You ride your bike to work? How cool!
ReplyDeletei like it too! i'm fond of the idea of wearing pieces that each have neat details so that an outfit all together makes a statement. (did that make any sense? basically, all the pieces are awesome and then put together they make a fantastic outfit!)

I think this is very beautiful and simple! I can see where it may have been tough to ride a bike in it...I always struggle with that too...dresses and wind are not friends! Heh, funny how you thought your shoes look like wedge sneakers..I think they add some fun to this ensemble!
ReplyDeletethis is a great look
ReplyDeletejust love that sweater and the heart necklace adds the perfect touch
