Pleats and Plaid

Alternately titled: More Things That Go with Orange

I think I’m breaking one of the cardinal rules of style blogging in that I’m wearing the same scarf I wore yesterday again today:

But, hey, is it my fault that orange goes with everything?  Of course not; I’m just taking advantage of that fact (yes, Erin, it’s a fact) by pairing my favorite scarf with everything I possibly can.  Today I paired the scarf (Nordstrom) with a handmade pleated plaid skirt (vintage, thrifted), gray wool sweater (thrifted), tights (Spanx via Nordstrom) and what are apparently my new favorite booties (Nine West via TJ Maxx).

It has gotten very, very cold here in Oregon lately causing me to shift my aesthetic more towards function over form.  I generally try to maintain both in my outfits, but during the winter, the weather forces me to become increasingly practical.  For example, wool sweaters and cashmere scarves help keep me warm during my freezing bike commute.  And the tights both help to keep me warm, but also dry quickly if I have to ride my bike in the rain.  Which, this being Oregon, I usually have to ride my bike in the rain.

How about you, Dear Readers?  Does the cold weather increase the functionality of your outfits, or are you still all about form?

Happy Friday, Everyone!  And have a fabulous weekend!

Gracey

  1. Lovely outfit! I'm definitely with you. I usually shop for clothes with that mindset anyway. I think it's totally possible to shop for functionality as well as look good. You've shown it well here!

    Love this post!

  3. Oddly enough cold in New Orleans increases the form because we can finally layer and wear jeans without feeling quite so sweaty. I love pairing stuff up for winter here because it does feel cold but I am never outside for too long so I just wear what I like and throw a huge coat over it.

  5. So silly! I love the quality, and draping of this scarf. Just not the "orangeness" of it.

  6. I am always about functionality, I used to have many heels I wasn't comfortable in so I sold them. Now only practical and comfortable things, that doesn't mean that the are not beautiful ; )

  8. Gracey, I want you to know that you've been a big influence on my fashion-choices. The way you rock scarves led me to try one today. My style is in many ways directly affected by yours. So... thanks!

  9. Love the pleats:)

To me, the cooler weather just means more layers (which I love)!

  10. Hey it's such a beautiful colour-why not wear the same scarf 2 days in a row! I love the pattern of your skirt. Even though I live in Canada (brrr) my clothes are still more about form than functionality (I've been known to wear stilettos in the snow-not saying it's practical but that's what I do!)

  11. Nothing wrong with wearing the same scarf two days in a row. It's an accessory just like rings, earrings, etc. That is my defense anyway.

Cute outfit- that orange scarf really does add a great pop of color to it!

  14. Cold definitely makes me more functional, even though I don't have to bike in the cold like you! But I do have to make sure I can play outside with the kiddo, and that we're both layered up to be happy and warm. Layers make me happy.

So do pleated skirts. Why don't I have one? Lusting after yours! And, I'm still fond of the scarf... :)

  16. I know I was apologizing for wearing the same item twice too, but I don't think doubling up like that is a cardinal rule of style blogging. Instead, I think it's great to see multiple ways to wear the same item and when you show them closer together, it makes a bigger impact I think! and I have to say, that is the perfect grey sweater!

  18. First of all - I would wear that scarf with everything too - I love it!
Second - your skirt. it is to die for. i'm literally in love with it. let's work something out, dear skirt-friend.
Third - I can't believe you have to ride your bike in the rain! Is most of what you own waterproof? Do you avoid fabrics that aren't supposed to get wet because of that??
And most importantly - you look cute as always :) And I like when it gets cold here (NC) because that means LAYERS!!!

  22. Well, you know how I feel about orange, which is that there's never enough of it. And I hear you on the effects cold weather has on personal style. I am all about the layering, but when I'm layering bulk-on-bulk, just to stay warm, I kind of just wish the weather would warm back up a touch already.

  23. Oh cute skirt, loving that plaid!!! The orange does look really spiffy and pulls out the colours in the skirt...this would look really cute with a brown belt over your sweater.
