Matchy-Matchy vs. Clashy-Clashy

I considered wearing red skinny jeans with this color-blocked sweater:

But, that would have been too matchy-matchy for my tastes.  Given the choice, I usually prefer to be clashy-clashy rather than matchy-matchy.  There may be some deep-seeded psychological reason behind that preference; such as I’m afraid to look too put together lest people start to expect it from me, but mostly I think it’s just that I’m drawn to riotous color.

Like the bright mustard yellow color of these cords:

These cords (Gap) make me happy and it made me happy today to pair them with this color-blocked sweater (Old Navy) and my all-time-favorite boots (Born Crown “Sosie” via Nordstrom).  I also added some bracelets and a watch that could serve to tie the look together if one was insistent on that sort of thing.

What about you, Reader Friends?  Do you tend towards matchy-matchy or clashy-clashy?

Happy Tuesday, Everyone!

  3. Oh geesh. I'm so inclined towards matchy matchy. I have this weird tick that makes clashing seem so super daring. Which is of course one of the reason I friggin love following your blog. So much color, rocking together and paving the way for us clashy-shy girls to figure it out.

  4. Matchy-matchy, but I aspire to clashy-clashy, for sure. Love the cords a lot!

  5. HAHAHA girl, you are too funny! Clashy-clashy all the way!
I really love this sweater-top and I actually love how you styled it! I think I prefer the mustard cords to red jeans...but I'd have to see to know for sure :) Can't believe that sweater is just Old Navy, btw! Love your boots, and the wrist-candy...guess I just love it all!
Also, you always look so pretty and happy in your photos - truly a joy to see, my dear! :)

  7. I swing both ways but I am more excited when I pull off a clashy clashy look. Love when people say "I'd never have put those colors together but they look good."

    Great cords.

  9. I'm more of a "it goes together" than "it matches." Which can be a combo of both?

Love this look... which totally "goes" in my book :)

  10. I lean towards matchy-matchy, I think. I suspect that my love of navy comes from how well it matches with dark denim.

  11. LOL! Oh, Gracey. You always make me laugh. I think I tend more towards matchy-matchy only because when I do the clashy-clashy thing, I look like a three-year-old dressed me. Scratch that. A color blind three-year-old.

  12. I am definitely a matchy-clashy kind of gal, because I love to have colors theme through an outfit, but I also like to put a bunch of different colors together as long as, like Chelsea says, they "go." This definitely goes!

  13. i like both! matching is fab sometimes...like how cool is a monochromatic look? but clashing is fab too. cuz bright colors together, mixing patterns, all are so much fun!

you look great, Gracey. i really love those jeans!

  14. Your outfit is fantastic!

I'm totally matchy-matchy and have to remind myself to try something different every now an then.. I sometimes feel like more than two colours are overwhelming on me. But I definitely aspire to wear clashy-er things!

  15. I think it depends on my day. I admit that matchy-matchy is often easier than me, and then I add something that distracts from the match (for example, I probably would have worn the red jeans, then added something from accessories that was totally outside the color palette, like a purple necklace). But I ADORE your addition of mustard here, which works just perfectly with the warm neutrals and the red pop on the sweater. So perfect!

  16. I definitely lean towards clashy clashy. I mean there is a thin line between that and "UGH, what a horrible outfit!" But I try to walk carefully. YOUR outfit is a perfect example of JUST RIGHT! I love that sweater by the way :)

  17. Happy Tuesday is right, this outfit makes me happy. I love it. Eh, it depends on the weather, I could go either way. Soemtimes I like to match, sometimes I don't!

  18. Ah I'm loving those boots! I'm afraid I like to match - if I could have a matching coat and shoes for every outfit I'd be quite happy! Altho the other day I wore black with navy... rebellious! ;)

  19. Hey, we are mustard cord twins!
and given how i've worn mine, i guess I am squarely in the clashy side.

  20. I may very well be the leader of the matchy-matchy club, not that I'm proud of it. But, come on, I grew up in a time when people dyed their satin shoes to match their prom/graduation/bridesmaid dresses. Brown with black still feels a little rebellious to me. And if I'm not ready to clash yet, at least I can appreciate the look on others. ;)
