Pinspiration: Bright Jacket, Black Base

Today I wore a bright red jacket layered over a black base:

I love this look, but I can’t take any credit for it.  I copied it directly from a Pin of J’sEveryday Fashion.

Me:

See?  Practically twins.

I knew I wanted to recreate this look as soon as I saw it.  Not because it’s particularly ground-breaking; black and red are very classic.  No, for me, this look had extra appeal in the form of the cap-toe shoes.  They’re a classic in their own right, but I wouldn’t have thought to pair the two.  The cap-toes make this feel fresh.  At least to my eye.  And made it something I wanted to try.

For my recreation of this look, I layered a red, vintage coat (Maurice via Goodwill), because somehow I don’t have a red blazer, over black ankle pants (Vince Camuto via Nordstrom) and a black turtleneck sweater (Hinge via Nordstrom).  My cap-toe shoes are Bandolino wedges (via DSW) and I also added a vintage necklace (Sarah Coventry via Red Fox Vintage) and vintage earrings.

Also, because it's Monday and there is nothing shy about this look, I'm linked up to Visible Monday at Not Dead Yet Style.

Happy Monday, Everyone!

  4. Ooh, you look all fancy! Kind of like a retro movie star. I love the cap-toe shoes - I've been wanting a pair ever since I started seeing them all over the blogosphere.

  5. I think I like the proportions of your outfit better than the original. It gives it a vintage look and Gray Skies is right, it is like a movie star. I have some cap toe flats that I love. They do add so much to an outfit. You look amazing.

  6. Yes, yes, pinspiration, but your look is better and more classic! This may be my number # 1 Gracey look!!

  7. SO COOL! (See, all caps excitement at the coolness.) I love, love, love high contrast colour combos, and red and black is WAY up there on my list. Great silhouette, as well. You look great.

  8. I loooove this look--perhaps because I sew the same style jacket for myself. So far, I've sewn one in black with an oversized floral pattern (kinda loud but I love it). I'm working on a black and cream one that has butterflies all over it.

Love your blog. I read it regularly. You dress like a normal, active, modern woman. Can't say that about every blog out there.

  9. Like others above, I like your version much better than the original inspiration (no offence intended to her, she looks great too). It's that amazing coat that does it, very 1950s Grace Kelly-ish, the shape and the shorter sleeves are incredibly elegant. And wearing it over all black makes the coat the star, which it is. Thought the shoes are pretty great too! Is the necklace Sarah Coventry, by any chance? I have an owl necklace of that make and see their jewellery on Ebay quite often, it seems to sell very well. I am a little in love with this look, Gracey the Movie Star! xxx

  10. I always struggle with pairing brights and black together, I can just never get it out of the 'costume' zone so I'm going to have to take some notes from you on this! I think I like your version of this look better, the sleeve length and the coat length over the black is SO sharp and sleek looking, it's looks like a blend of Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly.
