Prim, Proper and Pleated

Daily Outfit for Monday, April 18, 2011

I feel very prim and proper in this outfit…

…which is sort of funny because prim and proper isn’t usually a look I cultivate.  But, that’s exactly what this is.  From the prissy little bow on the blouse (Banana Republic) which you can't see well, to the pleats and the polka dots on the skirt (vintage – thrifted), to the sensible shoes (Kenneth Cole Reaction – thrifted).  Even the tights (Nordstrom) and the cardigan (Gap) feel prim and proper to me.

I don’t know that this is a look I’ll repeat often – I sort of feel like an imposter in that I imagine myself as more of a Billy Bad-Bottom than this look implies.  Of course, there is the fact that I’m actually not much of a Billy Bad-Bottom at all, but I don’t know that I’m this prim and proper either.

What about you, Friend Reader – does what you wear always speak definitively to who you are?

Happy Monday, All!

  1. I love that skirt, and I think the outfit is playful enough that it's not too "prim and proper." I actually don't really have a great sense of what my style looks like in an objective way - I just wear whatever feels like fun at any given moment, and I think my style tends to fluctuate a lot because of it.

Thank you for your sweet and insightful comment on my post today, I really appreciated it :o)

  9. I love that skirt, it is all kinds of awesome. I always feel a little unlike myself when I'm wearing something prim and proper, maybe because I like to think of myself as a bit of a Billy Bad Bottom too.

  10. I love this but I am a polka dot fanatic; interestingly I don't own much in them except what I call my I love lucy dress (don't ask).

I like to think of myself as a modern badass but I think I dress more like a slightly updated schoolmarm. Eh, it still works.

  13. What a marvelous skirt!

And I think mixing up your looks is always wise. Keeping to one aesthetic is a great way to get stuck in a rut.

and i like to dress in ways i feel like aren't me sometimes just to mix it up and to push myself out of my comfort zone - of course if i dressed in my comfort zone everyday i'd never take of my p.j.'s!

  19. I just want you know that I responded with something witty and endearing to all of your comments and then my computer ate those comments. So, my computer and I are in a fight, obviously, but you and I, Friend Reader, are not. It's just that the computer is winning right now. I'm considering an end run by using a different computer. That'll show it.
