Daily Outfit for Thursday, June 02, 2011
I think this dress is so pretty:
I paired the dress (vintage Karin Stevens – thrifted) with black ankle-tie espadrilles (Very Volatile via Nordstrom). I wanted to keep it simple given the fairly busy pattern of the dress (an abstract floral). And I also wanted to highlight the cut of the dress, which I think is brilliant for my shape. I love the fact that the waistband hits me at the smallest part of my waist and that the top is fitted without being too tight. And, it has pockets! Two of them!!
Sometimes I feel like there is pressure on bloggers to be “edgy” or “experimental” in how we dress. Outfits with deep juxtapositions between the pieces (cowboy boots and ball gowns, tutus and Converse, etc) are applauded as being unique and so very interesting. And while I would like my readers to find me interesting, sometimes I’m drawn to pieces just because they are pretty. And I think this dress is very pretty.
How about you, Friend Reader? Are you drawn to edgier pieces or are you a fan of pretty for pretty’s sake?
Happy Thursday, All!

I'm all for pretty and practical. There are very few (if any) people who can pull off tutus and Converse in their day to day real lives.
ReplyDeleteI love the cut of this dress and the pattern. It is a fresh and lovely look.
ReplyDeleteI often come across dresses like this as I'm thrifting...and pass them up althought the fit is flattering on me as well. I think I have connotations with a dress of this type...just as you write. Maybe I will give them another try.
I'm a bit of both. I'd take that dress and throw on a big belt and a statement necklace :)
ReplyDeleteChic on the Cheap
I'll be the first to admit that I'm pretty non-edgy. I like things to match or at least pick up each other's colors, and I don't pair wildly different levels of formality in my clothes either. Well OK I have worn flowery dresses with Docs in my lifetime, but it was the 90s. Anyway. I see a fair bit of "edgy" dressing on blogs that clearly looks like a costume competition.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't do so well with edgy. I'm often drawn to simplicity in clothing. Which is exactly why I like this dress - it's simple and pretty and perfect just as it is!
ReplyDeleteI struggle with that dilemma myself because I really like edgy clothes and looks but I just don't have the time and drive to come up with stuff that works like that very often. It also doesn't help that I work in a more corporate environemt. I think that dress is very pretty.
ReplyDeleteI love the color and the small prints on the dress.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I do wear some crazy combinations but often my girls tell me "mami take some stuff off" or "please, change that shirt (or skirt), it doesn't go well together" and I do listen to them.
First of all, that dress is super pretty and I love that it has pockets!! Second, I would not call myself edgy at all, but I am ok with my lack of edge although I do sometimes feel pressure to be more exciting I always seem to end up with what I feel comfy in.
ReplyDeletei totally agree, some things are just better left alone... such as this amazing dress!

Steffys Pros and Cons
This post really speaks to me, as I too have that conflict - I find that I'm drawn to things that match. I also have trouble re-mixing, because if I find a way that something looks pretty it's hard to not wear it the way my mind intends it to look. I figure if I'm not edgy or interesting enough readers ( all five of them :) will just move on. I'd like to think that people continue to visit not just of the outfits for because a bit of a relationship has been formed. Does that make sense?
ReplyDeletei agree that somethings are just downright pretty and this dress is one of them! what a great thrifting find! (and it has pockets!)

The cut on this dress is perfectly flattering. I love the pattern and good shoe choice! :) (also, the pleats are so fun!)
ReplyDeletegosh, depends on my mood. i do love pretty things. and sometimes i love simplicity and like to just wear a dress as it is. but then a lot of times i like to be creative and see how i can mix my clothes and come up with something completely unique and fun.
ReplyDeletei love this dress. i love the simplicity of it and how beautiful it looks on you. i love the pockets too! i'm a sucker for pockets!
Ooh, really pretty! I don't mind you didn't try to be edgy with it at all. :) I think the black glasses-black sandals combo accentuates nicely the beauty of the dress - and thus yours. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd the David Mitchell book is so fantastic I couldn't put it down all weekend - hence my lack of blogposts. :D
Love the way this dress falls and the pockets and pattern too :)
ReplyDeleteLooking lovely!
I am probably not the edgiest when it comes to clothing but when I meet people I am often identified as "vintage" right away even when I am wearing none at all. Must be the way I pair stuff I guess :)
